Extremely Underrated Stoner Metal Album - 96%

CosmicChrisTV, December 29th, 2019
Written based on this version: 2016, Digital, Independent

This album is something I discovered while on break at work a few months ago. It was released in the year 2016 and I am extremely surprised that nobody is talking about it. I'm also pretty surprised to not find any reviews for this album on Metal Archives. I would go as far to say that this album is just as good as Dopethrone by Electric Wizard. Hopefully, I can do justice in my review of this incredible debut album. This is the self-titled album from Blunt.

The instrumentation in this album is very blues inspired. The guitarists make use of pentatonic scales quite often. All in all, the guitars are actually very relaxing to listen to. There's a lot of cool guitar solos in this album. I have never smoked weed once in my life, but I imagine the feeling I got from these riffs is equivalent to being high as fuck. The drums are slow and simple, obviously. After all, this is a stoner metal album. Overall, the instrumentation seems to take a lot of inspiration from the type of rock/metal music you would here in the 1970's.

Let's move on to the vocals shall we? At first, the singer was just doing the typical soaring vocals we've all heard in stoner metal. You know, the type of vocals where it sounds like they're just putting on a voice and talking. Not that it's a bad thing. In fact, I think that form of singing is perfect for stoner metal. However, the vocalist eventually does something very unexpected. He incorporates high pitched screeching vocals that sound like something I would hear in grindcore or black metal. It caught me off guard, but I absolutely loved it. I had never heard screeching vocals in a stoner metal album, so it was really cool and unique to hear something like that. I honestly wish that the vocalist did it more often throughout the album.

The production of this album is pretty good overall. I feel like this album should be considered a stoner metal classic. My favorite three tracks on this album are Space Dabs, My Four Walls, and Bad Trip. The best thing this album has going for it is the screeching vocals and the riffs. The only mediocre part of the album is the drums, as they are quite slow, but I already stated that you should expect slow drums in a stoner metal album. Therefore, this album is a pretty solid release. It gets a 96% from me.
