Trails of Anguish - Scarred Memento

Great,Distiguishable Black Metal - 90%

WinterBliss, May 12th, 2009

Trails of Anguish plays a style similar to the other Canadian black metal bands affiliated with them and their impressive drummer/singer Scythrawl . This being the second, and sadly the final release from Trails of Anguish serves as an appealing morsel as to what could have been a great full length.

A torrent of tremolo picked riffs, hyperfast and well triggered blast beats showcasing impressive fills and truly ravenous vocals carry the two songs on this ep.. Some acoustic guitars allow for a little build up and a sense of mood, especially in the second track, but for the most part it's just your basic black metal instrumentation. The band utilizes breaks and build ups and juxtapositions into narrow passages of a catchy riff on top of blast beats to create an enjoyable and powerful sound.

Scythrawl plays at an absurd speed for practically the whole ep and is able to match it with interesting fills and little mid pace beats that keep the ep surging along. On top of that I absolutely love his vocals, they display so much emotion and sound, well, anguished. I really like their dynamics and the way the vocals stretch and seem to linger in comparison to the very fast drums and guitar.

In the end they demonstrate they really knew what they were doing, and it's a shame this wasn't the main output of this enclave of these musicians (the focus being that of Nefastüs Diès). This, along with their previous ep, is great and deserves a lot more attention.
