The Soulless - Isolated

The Soulless is correct - 10%

Who'd have thought that when British melodic death metal crew Ignominious Incarceration changed their name to The Soulless, it would be the most apt name change in metal history? That's exactly what their music became. With the name change came a change from solid technical melodic death metal to soulless and bland metalcore.

The riffs are lifted right from Slaughter of the Soul, unsurprisingly. Where else do melodic metalcore bands get their riffs from? While Ignominious Incarceration (who shall be referred to as II from now on) packed their music with technical and interesting melodic riffs, these are just straight unoriginal plagiarism. There is also a distinct lack of solos, which of course II had plenty of.

The drumwork is pretty decent, but still nothing special. The fills are decent, but they could be much better. There's a lot of double bass use, but the drum tone is quite annoying, which takes away from the already boring and annoying music.

Finally, the vocals. While II's music had a nice mix of growls, screams and raspy shouts, the vocalist here is opting for a monotonous metalcore bark. He rarely changes it, and it just sounds boring. Even some clean vocals might've saved it, but it was not to be.

Honestly, avoid this unless you love shitty metalcore. Everyone else should grab Of Winter Born by II instead.
