Alchemist - Embryonics 90-98

Definitive. - 94%

PyroVesten, December 4th, 2005

Alchemist are true pioneers. Not only of Australian metal but of innovative extreme music in general. 'Embryonics' represents the band from 1990 through to 1998 - including material from their 1990 and 1991 demo tapes,1994 promo tape, plus studio releases 'Jar Of Kingdom' (1993), 'Lunasphere' (1995), 'Spiritech' (1997), and finally 'Eve Of The War' (1998) plus a few live bonus tracks. The 28-track 2CD compilation is absolutely essential listening for all Alchemist fans (especially those whose collections are incomplete), and those with a soft spot for Extreme Metal.

With a total of 9 tracks you won't hear on any of Alchemist's studio releases, and 19 of their best efforts from the first quartet of official releases, this truly is a definitive collection of Alchemist material. 'Chinese Whispers' is (of course) the first track of 'Embryonics'. Anything else would simply have been unacceptable. That ear-piercing screech and trippy keyboard/riff combo has become synonymous with the band since its release and is likely to go down as their magnum opus. From there we are treated to a comprehensive showcasing of the continual evolution of Alchemist through the early years of their career. Rather than ordering tracks chronologically, some thought has gone into their arrangement, making for a much more engaging listen. Surprisingly this method works well. Instead of sounding fractured or disjointed everything seems to tie in quite well. I am tempted to detail the brilliance of individual tracks, but with so much to cover, this review would soon become an essay. (You can find much more in the review archive on http://www.PyroMusic.net/ ). I will instead keep it simple and explain briefly for those who are unfamiliar with Alchemist. Add one part Psychedelia with healthy doses of Death Metal, Thrash and more innovative ideas than you can poke a bong at and you have Alchemist. There was, and still is, no other band that sounds like them. Their ability to seamlessly fuse tranquility with aggression, extremity with restraint and a burning passion for inventiveness had led to some of the most distinct, memorable and otherworldly tracks Australian (and world) metal has produced. Close to a decade of excellence is included on this release.

Long-time Alchemist artist/guitarist Roy has once again taken care of the design, artwork and layout of 'Embryonics' and it looks a millions bucks. In addition to the fantastic cover, the booklet contains liner notes, gig posters from the same era as the included songs, loads of photos and plenty more. It really doesn't get much better value than this.

I cannot speak highly enough of 'Embryonics'. It is absolutely essential listening. 8 years and over 150 minutes of Australian metal history. Fantastic stuff.
