Pustulated - Pathognomonic Purulency

First Attempt - 70%

optimuszgrime, February 29th, 2008

A first attempt by this great death/grind band. This album is nothing special yet, although some of the songs have some killer riffs. But all in all this is just an average recording of gored out death metal. It reflects on the great things to come later, which is why it got the high rating it did from me. There is absolutely nothing special in this recording except the vocals. It is well executed death/grind with gore influences, with solid riffs and funny touches, but it just has not yet reached the supreme brutality that this band would later become. As such there is not much to write about for me. The vocals are superb, and were recorded real nice and loud, and gurgly as fuck as well. The band sound like the newer Purulent and older Devourment mixed together at this point, and did not yet develop their own sound.

Brutal Breakdown Based Guttural Supreme Death - 80%

Vocals are fucking amazing. Guttural, low and brutal as fuck, the guitar work is tight, with slides and pinches complimenting brilliantly. The production is slightly tinny, therefore the drums don't sound great, but are still tight. I think this band need to quit fucking around and get a bassist in. The crunchdowns are tough and brutal and that speed change of introducing a breakdown goes very well with the general tempo and speed of the CD. Which is indeed fucking fast. The breakdown just gets slower and slower in "Forensic Torture", it's fucking great, with blasts over the top. The only problem is, the band are definitely very talented, but they should quit putting in so many breakdowns, I mean, after you get to Forensic Torture, you think to yourself "ok, this has been done before". They need to limit the breakdowns more, something to look forward to, rather than it being the core of the song and the base to build around.
But overall, fuck that, brutal shit here, I like it.
