Buried Dreams - Perceptions

Perceptions of Mexico's metal - 82%

arkbath, December 3rd, 2004

I must accept it, I haven't listen to bands from Mexico, but I know Buried Dreams is actually one of the most representatives acts over here. I would describe their music as melodic and technic death metal, with some black metal trends. Perceptions is a good album. The production is OK, but considering that it was recorded at Studio Fredman (Dark Tranquillity, In Flames) I expected more, concerning to the sound. About the music, if you like Dark Tranquillity, In Flames, Arch Enemy, Children of Bodom,... you may take a listen to Perceptions: melodic, agressive, great solos (even though they get lost in the rhythmic section at times) and atmospheric keyborads make you get into their epic lyrics. One fact that makes this album interesting is that the songs don't have a defined structure, so you can expect anything, being surprised with what they bring to you.

Illnamiqui is a good intro, but I don't like it very much because the sound of the keyboards, they sound too artificial for me. The Riddle is one of the best tracks in the album, I'm impressed with the work in the guitars and drums. The Mind's Subconcious is a fast, agressive songs with splendid solos, but agains production could have been better. Other good songs are 360 and Perceptions, but the highlight is Gods of Fire, an epic song with an incredible main riff, some variations and a piano outro closing the album. Excelent. The limited edition had a bonus track: Buried Dreams, a Carcass cover. Obviously the band took their name from this song and I haven't heard the original version, but they make a great work with this song.

I recommend Perceptions, it can prove that the metal scene in Mexico exists and it can contribute with great musical ideas. Look for it.
