Ereshkigal - The Raping of the Divine - 60%

Phuling, April 19th, 2008

Earlier this year I reviewed an album from the Mexican black metal act Ereshkigal, and now I have the opportunity to dissect the Greek black metal act Ereshkigal. Well, what is evident from the start is that they surely are from Greece as both Rotting Christ and Varathron can be used for comparisons.

It’s not a bad album, but the rigid drum machine keeps annoying me. Sure, I’ve definitely heard a whole lot worse use of programmed drums, but it’s still too stiff and rigid. Eventhough I try to overlook it I find the annoyance factor a bit too high. But the album does not consist of just drums, of course. Some very energetic thrash influenced riffing and weird-as-hell orchestral parts makes the album stand out a bit. And when I say weird I mean weird! I can’t really explain it, but it adds a schizophrenic touch to the tunes. It can turn from melodic to harsh to almost heavy metal in an instance. Vocal wise it’s black, borderline thrash screams.
You know, I’m not really taking this album to heart, but I’m sure that fans of Greek black metal will.
