Necroccultus - Encircling the Mysterious Necrorevelation

True worshippers of Dark Death Metal - 93%

peterott, December 27th, 2005

Now we enter the world of Dark Death Metal. Founded by TREBLINKA/TIAMAT (Sumerian Cry) and DARKTHRONE (Soulside Journey) this is about the slower side of Death Metal incorporating blasphemous lyrics into it with dark gloomy riffs. Other bands worth mentioning in this genre are SARGATANAS from Mexico, early THE CHASM, IN HELL from Brasil, Mexican ANCIENT GODS, Swedish CURSE, SHUB NIGGURATH from Mexico, old OBSCURITY and MEFISTO from Sweden and INFINITUM OBSCURE from Mexico.
Hmmmmm, a lot of bands from Mexico mentioned here. Especially SARGATANAS have a somehow leading function in this genre. Till today they are playing this style up to perfection.
But all of a sudden the guys from NECROCCULTUS entered the scence in 2004/05 with this monumental release. I'll only describe the absolute highlights in order to not repeat myself too often:

Necroccultus - Starting with one of the best riffs of the CD from second one gives already the impression of what is Dark Death Metal all about. Slow deep and hard torturing sound of doom.

The Necrosphere Within - The beginning reminds on TIAMAT's "Malicious Paradise" followed by slow haunting Death Metal. The voice comes from the depths of the abyss, the guitar sound is just incredible, the bass is clearly listenable, and the drums sound like the hammers of mayhem. All together build up a dense wall of unholy sound.

Into The Veils Of Damnation - Aahhhh, the title already says it all. The guitar riff starting at 1:35min is among the Top 3 rcorded riffs ever. The slow pacing of the music may lead one to believe that this is pure madness. Even SARGATANAS can't play this any better. This is a 110-points song, which each and everyone has to hear in order to see the gloominess of this band.

Let's conclude: Band-members wearing GROTESQUE and TRAUMATIC shirts coming from Mexico usually play Dark Death Metal of the highest quality. Songtitles like "In the Darkest Regions Of Death" or "Unleashed Doom Conjurations" are pointing clearly to every listener what the music is all about. So why not giving this record a fair 100 point rating ? Well, the last 3 songs on the CD seem to be from a different recording session, where the guitar sound is less crunching than on the first 5 tx. And that guitar sound in particular is the climax of this Dark Death Metal highlight of the year.
