Agathocles / Averno - Untitled / Signos del tiempo

almost obsolete - 60%

morbert, March 7th, 2008

Just like their earlier split album with Lunatic Invasion, this split album consists purely of live Agathocles recordings. This time the over all production / sound is pretty decent (enjoyable is a better word) and a few songs here are very good versions.

The live version of “An Abstract” is memorable since that specific song only appears on a few Agathocles releases and live versions of it have been pretty rare for a couple of years (another live version can be found on the “Senseless Trip” live album which was released in 2007 by the way). It also simply is an amazing song with nice rhythmical approach.

The live versions of two of their most famous crustcore / hardcore punk songs, “Labelisation” and “Get Off Your Ass” , are very good. Especially “Get Off Your Ass” is played a lot faster than the studio version on the “Distrust And Abuse” EP and sounds extremely good and powerful live.

It’s just that songs like “What A Nerve” and “Kill Your Idols” are too long to stay interesting the full length when played live and the production here simply isn’t good enough to make these songs sound as powerful as they did on the “Theatrical Symbolisation Of Life” album. Furthermore songs like “Squeeze Anton” and “Introtyl” have been released so many times before (live and studio versions) that spending money again for yet another live version is something you just don’t want to do anymore.

So you see, there are a few nice songs here but as a whole the album is a pretty obsolete Agathocles release and mostly a good way to get Colombian group Averno introduced in the worldwide grindcore scene. I still give it 60 points because it is one of the better sounding live releases by Agathocles and also has the rare song “Reprezione” on it.
