Mörker - Den sista utfärden

Well...would´ve liked some more guitars - 65%

bleedingvortex, April 7th, 2006

What we have here is band obviously influenced by Dimmu Borgir. This is not the worst influence to have since it is the earlier years of Dimmu Borgir that seems to
be of the biggest interest of the the guys in Mörker.

"Slaget om Norden" opens with keyboards taking up a lot of the sound which leaves the guitars fuzzing behind them. This song is not the worst I have ever heard but it is very safe. With safe I mean that there are no chances taken whasoever and the melodies are nice but oh so average.

"Dyster Tid" continues in the same style as the first track. This is a problem. The songs are to reminding of each other and has a tendencie of floating together. Here the guitar is i more on the front but still not enough for my ears.

"Raabjörn Speiler Draugheimens Skodde" is an obvious choice of a cover but i can´t see the reason. My guess i that this song was chosen because it is the one
that fits best with the own material of the band. Nonetheless, this is a cover of a sonng that was very good in its original form and therefore a cover seems like a waste of time.

"Tidlös Värld" is the song i like the best on this disc. Is guess this is because there are some guitardriven parts that breaks the pattern and leaves the keyboard behind for a while. Sure enough this song is just guitar driven for a while before rushing back into the safe format with leading keyboard and faceless melodies.

"Mörker" is, i guess, meant to be the beautiful song on this disc. And it is actually the best song on this release as the guitar gets show its face and even though the guitars are typical for this type of black metal it is nice to hear them break through the thick fog of keyboards. A good song that helps this release get a more respectable rating.

" Den Sista Utfärden" is of course and outro. But this is not as bad as it sounds as it is the perfect ending for this type of release. This is the only time on this disc that I am pleased with the keyboards. There is a very beautiful melancholy over this song.

If you like Dimmu Borgir this is a release for you. I would like to place a warning for the production that is in the flatter mode with drums sounding very trigged and of course the keyboards getting way too much space.
