Sapthuran - To the Edge of Land

Fresh and simple wintry gem - 80%

NausikaDalazBlindaz, November 23rd, 2006

Rising out of the bitterly cold northern Thule environmental, to which it returns after forty+ minutes, this is a great nature-themed concept recording blending atmosphere, field recordings and found sounds, soft acoustic guitar melodies and very primitive riff-driven BM. Singing is very harsh, dry and crackly and the Burzum pointillist guitars are no less raw. Where both electric and acoustic guitars are playing together, they more or less match each other note for note on very distinctive melodies. The purely acoustic guitar passages provide tonal and textural contrast and help to structure the music by building up to and coming down from the harsh and basic BM.
Not the most innovative recording of its kind but when I consider that such primitive BM has existed since at least 1990 and there is so much of it about, I'm surprised that fresh and simple albums like this continue to emerge from the snowy depths.
