Horna / Tenebrae in Perpetuum - Unohdetut kasvot, unohdettu ääni / Un sogno oscuro

A Truly Great Split - 100%

Swietowit666, August 2nd, 2005

For the first time since their split EP with Desolation Triumphalis, Horna shares a 7" with a band that actually deserve to be on the same vinyl with the Finnish masters. The Ouroboros songs were live and considered a bootleg by the band, one of the songs was even cut off early! Woods of Infinity are a band which I dislike in general, because despite their esoteric "experimentation", they come off as very childish. Blackdeath's song was horribly produced, the drums being almost completely drowned out. But now we get to this EP...

This vinyl pairs two of the most cold, sorrowful, and emotional songs released by both bands. Horna's side appears to have been recorded in the Envaatnags... session, as reflected by the production and simplicity of the song structure. However, despite the simplicity, this song overshadows all other songs from that album. Also, Horna has proved since the induction of Corvus on vocals that they can do no wrong musically, thus any release of theirs since that period is mandatory.

TIP's song is their best ever, and is in fact better than the Horna song. The production is desolate and biting like that of Pure Holocaust and Under a Funeral Moon, but the song itself, while influenced by these album, stands out on its own. It is clear that TIP has progressed since Onori..., as this song is more varied and emotional than any song on that album. I look forward to another full-length, or at least an EP from this band in the near future.

I don't know the limitation of this EP, but I insist that anyone into raw yet emotional black metal seek this out at any cost. I paid a little high for it ($13), considering it's an EP, but I would have gladly paid more. This is essential.
