Avrigus - The Final Wish

Avrigus – The Final Wish - 90%

ruigeroeland, August 15th, 2005

I liked Avrigus the minute I heard the first tones coming from the speakers. This is slow atmospheric doom-metal at it's best. The music mainly consists of piano, keyboard and beautiful singing by Judy Chiara (with occasional clean male backing vocals), and off course the slow and crushing riffs.

Avrigus succeeds in creating beautiful, but haunting and depressive compositions that really stand out.

The EP starts with the title track "The Final Wish". The track opens with a great piano intro. After a minute or so, the guitar steps in slowly, building up to the moment Judy starts to sing. At that time the guitar switches to a heavier riff and the drums kicks in. Furthermore, an organ is introduced to slow down the song ever further and creating a depressive feeling. Great song!

"As Ivy Groweth Green" starts out with heavy riffs from the start. Introducing an amazing piano (or keyboard?) theme after a while. Judy occasionally switches from the pretty monotonous style she used thus far to higher sections in this song, further enhancing the depressive mood.

"Desolate" (which also appears on the full-length "The Secret Kingsom") is an ambient piece that does not really work for me. Although I can appreciate the mood it tries to set, it does not really add something to the EP i.m.o.

The EP finishes with "Flesh" (which is also on the full-length). The song opens with Judy singing, with the piano and the guitars kicking in after a little while. The song could best be described as a depressive ballad and acts as a great closure of the EP, leaving one to wish it would have lasted longer.
