Asgaroth - Trapped in the Depths of Eve...

I have experienced the Depths of Eve... - 89%

After listening to Asgaroth for the first time I knew I would enjoy them, specifically Trapped in the Depths of Eve... The second track “Victorious Men Of Earth” opens the album up quite well, exposing the listener to what kind of atmosphere it provides.

The keyboards and variation of vocals is what makes this album as great as it is. Of course the other instruments are important too, but they don’t stand out quite as much as the keyboards and vocals. The keyboards range from ambient sounds like dark synthesizers to a reverbed piano sound that makes for great intros and mid breaks, like on the third track “Omens”. The vocals are more high pitched black metal shrieks, with very minimal use of clean ambient vocals. The drums are actually fairly fast on most songs, regular speed for black metal. Although the drums keep some speed to the songs, the guitars slow things down a bit, in a good way though. The guitars are great on here; mostly its rhythm in background, but when the lead riffs come in it really adds some power behind the melancholic melodies. For a great example see the track “The Dark Force” (my favorite song from the album). Although bass tends to be an issue on a lot of black metal albums, this is not the case here. In fact, as I’m listening to the album right now I can clearly hear the bass backing up the guitar as is should, at the same time, adding a sort of eerie feeling to the songs. Most songs have sort of a dark\depressive feeling to them, but there is some more upbeat catchy riffs here too, like on the track “The Choirs Of The Elemental Deities”.

I am usually a sucker for anything with good atmosphere. No exceptions here. Trapped in the Depths of Eve… is a great black\doom metal album with a hefty bag of atmosphere that I feel any black metal and doom metal fan can enjoy as long as they don’t mind slightly higher pitch vocals. This album is extremely rare to my knowledge but I wanted it so much that I was willing to pay a big price for it off eBay. If you do ever see this album, or if it ever becomes re-issued, I would definitely suggest getting this. Asgaroth’s first full length is only the beginning of what they have to offer, but it’s pretty damn enjoyable.
