Medieval Steel - Medieval Steel

An unfurnished jewel. - 95%

Empyreal, March 26th, 2008

A lesson I have continually learned in my time of listening to heavy metal is that no matter how much cool music you have, there is always one or two obscure, unknown bands from the '80s that are just as cool, just waiting to be discovered. Medieval Steel is one of those sort of bands, and they play a bare-bones, riff-oriented style of heavy metal with wailing vocals, outer-space melodies, catchy choruses, and the whole package. This is mostly similar to Iron Maiden, Jag Panzer or Omen, but it does have a few traces of the sound that Queensryche and Crimson Glory would perfect in years to come - especially in the wailing, silky steel vocals of frontman Bobby Franklin, whose vocal lines are certified heavy metal gold. The riffs here are just pure classic metal bliss and unless you're a pussy with no taste at all, your head will be banging in no time to the searing, high quality trip back to '80s true metal glory that is Medieval Steel.

This is an immortal style of music; this riff-centric, simple style of traditional heavy metal, and I will never, ever tire of it. Medieval Steel are not re-inventing any wheels, and they didn't do anything that hadn't already been done by a couple of other bands, but I see no reason for classic metal proprietors to shy off this one. If you love heavy metal, then you will love this.
