Sykdom - Mjollnir

Grandiose Journeys - 95%

TheStormIRide, January 26th, 2006

Excellent black metal with proper keyboard orchestrations that add to the atmosphere instead of creating a false atmosphere. Sykdom really has on a winner on their hands with this album. The production is thin, like most black metal bands. The style on this one has more in line with old school black metal bands. The vocals guitar riffing and drumming are all in line; the only exception is the keyboards on the first track that add majesty and a feeling of awe.
This release, to me, feels very cold and angry. The music is very emotional in that it captures the essence of anger and hate. But there is also an element of beauty mixed in. Much like an ancient forest, there is a sense of wonder and awe mixed in with the more primal instincts. The result is a very beautiful release with different emotions running wild. This album takes the listener on a journey from the fields of war to the realms of the gods and back again. It's a shame this album doesn't have a wider audience, as it is very deserving of one.
All of the tracks, with the exception of a shorter 6 minute track, all tracks clock in over 7 minutes. This is a very epic release, with a feeling of grandeur around it. If given the chance this album should be picked up. It is recommended to fans of old school black metal, as well as fans of the newer symphonic styles, simply because of the grand feeling of this recording. An excellent release! I can't wait to hear more from this band!
