Thy Serpent - Christcrusher

Christcrusher has crushed this band's reputation - 66%

thammaren, August 30th, 2008

I knew I could expect big things from Thy Serpent after hearing their first album. And I certainly had no doubt of this after hearing Lords Of Twilight. Those albums are both some of my personal favorites in all of black metal. However, this album was a bit of a drop from their previous level.

Don't misunderstand me, these were all good songs, especially "Christcrusher" and "Calm Blinking" but the dark feel of Forests of Witchery and Lords Of Twilight is gone. Now they are just pure angry energy (listen to the track Christcrusher for details), with openly Anti-Christian lyrics. I have nothing against that, but the earlier lyrics were a bit more deep and thought out. In their previous works, Thy Serpent would never have written about something as mundane as church burnings.

This CD is the first of Thy Serpent that I feel can be called "true" black metal. Forest Of Witchery and Lords Of Twilight were definitely more melodic and well-written. The only thing that separates it from Norwegian Black Metal is the production quality is fair, which is a mark of the band.

I liked most of the tracks on this album, and I would recommend the CD to black metal fans in general, but those who have followed the band wouldn't be so fond. If the lyricist had not changed (it was Antti Litmanen from Babylon Whores, now it's some guy called T. Maensivu), this would have been a greater by far.
