Nattefrost - Terrorist (Nekronaut Pt. I)

Minimal punky blackness - 90%

illevor, January 18th, 2008

This is not an easy album to digest. Nattefrost delves into a shittily recorded punk sound that won't please many black metal fans. Unlike "Blood & Vomit" this does not sound like a Carpathian Forest album. Also unlike his first solo release, Nattefrost does not play all the instruments himself.
First thing to be noticed is the recording: primitive. The guitar is thin and Nattefrost's vocals are distant and often consist of raw shouting as opposed to a black metal rasp. The drums are repetitive and often abandon doing fills to keep pounding away. The album is not 'heavy' at all, but it is raw as hell.
The lyrics are hateful and hilarious at the same time, as black metal ought to be. This is black metal with a punk/rock n roll attitude.
"Primitive Death" is my favorite track on the release, featuring shouted single words, relentless, unpleasantly loud snare hits and lyrics about destroying your body.

It is 'true' ? I think very much so. It's a strong 'fuck off' to the increasingly trendy black metal scene. Crank this up and earn the disrespect of all people in the vicinity.

Wow, just looking at some of these song titles makes me laugh like a little girl. It's clear that Nattefrost is just going for pure humor here. I always knew he was never the most serious guy (he's not Gaahl,) but I can't help but have a good time listening to this. The opening song, Nekronaut (Cunt Cunt Gimme More) is a funny little jingle with some interesting, childish lyrics about fucking little girls and so forth. Some of the songs are more serious than others but all in all this album is just meant to be something different from the norm I suppose. The music is much more punk than BM, kinda like Darkthrone's last album, but it's alright for what it is. Nattefrost of course has the usual image of a BMer in the booklet, holding upside down crosses and wearing spikes, ammo belts and covered in corpsepaint. The songs are all relatively short, the actual songs that is, as some of them are just clips of someone vomiting and pissing. The last song, The Death of Nattefrost, is just weird noises then 10 minutes of silence, which I think was a bit much. The song Preteen Deathfuck has very very childish lyrics, probably the most childish out of the entire record. But it's all fun and games to begin with. This is not meant for people who think all BM must be hard assed. As another reviewer said, Euronymous said BM should not give a fuck and that is exactly what Nattefrost has done here. He doesn't care what we think. Honestly I can't help but laugh whenever I hear this.

Not much more to say really. You have to listen to this with the intention of laughing your ass off. Don't buy it for the music because that's not what this album is about. If you can't get enough of Carpathian Forest then you may enjoy this album, as Nattefrost is their mainman. I wonder if he has ever (as Pungent Stench put it) been caught buttering?

Here on “Terrorist (Nekronaut Pt I)”, Nattefrost delivers a full-frontal, head on attack of old school black metal in the vein of Venom, but updated with an even harsher, more gritty sound. This illustrious songsmith of musical hatred is often an entirely vicious manifestation of a black metal G.G. Allin as Nattefrost growls like a man that is truly possessed on “Nekronaut (Cunt Cunt Gimme More)”, which is considerably influenced by old school speed punk as well as black metal.

“Black Metal Suicide” is a complete neck-breaker, mired in evil, soaked in alcohol and raw as Hell. A combination between a musical car crash at 100 MPH and a blood soaked rampage through a strip mall, “Hellcommander” finds the demonic figure growling, howling and screaming through one of this album’s most blistering tracks.

The title track finds Nattefrost on the verge of careening out of control with its highly abusive, yet memorable chorus. Let it be said that this man takes no prisoners in the delivery of his potent brand of hell spawned musical mayhem. Complete sonic mutilation!

This record will certainly be of some appeal to many of those who closely follow the wicked figurehead of darkness, with a likely probability of crossing over to those who might not necessarily find black metal to be of interest.

Solid, but not enough of a progression - 74%

This is not Blood & Vomit. This has to be pointed out. That album is a fucking classic for the Black Metal scene of the new millennium. It was completely over the top, with no motive to take itself seriously (and having a few laugh-out-loud moments), and mainly, it was fun (along with being the bane of posers everywhere).

This basically tries to be Blood & Vomit 2, and it somewhat succeeds, but just ends up sounding like a second-rate copy. Don’t get me wrong; it’s still decent, and there’re some classic songs like Black Metal Suicide (Claws Of Perdition) and the title track, but overall it just feels like “been there, done that”. This reuses a lot of ideas that were already done on Blood & Vomit, including the samples of a girl screaming in pain from penetration (compare Whore [Filthy Whore] to Preteen Deathfuck) to urination (Nattefrost Takes A Piss is redone and made predictable in Eine Kleine Arschmusik) to the outro (The Death Of Nattefrost has nothing on Still Reaching For Hell), etc. etc. It’s basically like comparing Annihilation Of The Wicked to older Nile, in that it doesn’t do much more than try to reclaim past achievements. In the process, the new versions (along with just being remakes of what was done before) are also dragged out, making the predictability that much more noticeable. For instance, the previously mentioned Nattefrost Takes A Piss just falls short of 30 seconds, while Eine Kleine… is over a minute longer. Nattefrost is running out of ideas, it seems.

So yeah, the humor aspect of the album is basically shit. Musically though, it does differentiate itself from Blood & Vomit, mainly in that it has a much more noticeable influence from the ‘80s underground (the production also sounds somewhat closer to an ‘80s production rather than the early ‘90s-styled full-on distortion in B&V). Nekroknaut (Cunt Cunt Gimme More) is one of the most blatant examples of this, with a midpaced riff set that sounds exactly like Celtic Frost, and lots of Tom Warrior-styled grunts and backup vocals mixed in with the more standard Black Metal screams. The mix of ‘80s and early ‘90s is somewhat similar to what Darkthrone have been doing on their last few albums, with songs such as Hellcommander representing the blastbeating faction of Black Metal. There’s even the rare guitar solo moment (again in Nekronaut, and I can’t think of any other songs with a solo at the moment). As far as the drums go, I’m pretty sure that this time around there’s an actual drum set instead of a “PLAYED; not PROGRAMMED” drum machine. And standing out completely from everything else Nattefrost has ever done, is the last ‘real’ song on the album, Dinsadansdjeveldyrkaar!!!, which is basically a Rock song with clean-sung (although still with a weird tone of voice) Norwegian lyrics. I guess it’s supposed to be funny as hell to those who speak Norwegian and can therefore understand the lyrics, but to those of us who don’t, we’re left out :(

I’m pretty sure I have the censored version of the album, because while the music itself is full of swear words and such, the booklet is filled with blurred-out pictures (oh yeah, there’re lots of words censored out in the transcription of the lyrics to Preteen Deathfuck, but that probably has to do with the subject matter). No biggie though, as you can still tell that it’s mostly stuff like penises, and the faces of various people who probably didn’t want to be ‘revealed’ in a degrading sort of way. As far as the lyrics go, they’re pretty much the typical “HAIL SATANAS BUTTSWUUP – RAPE THE VAGINA WHORE – WE WANK TO SODOM” kind of BM lyrics. I love that lyrical theme myself, so no complaints here.

When all is said and done, should you get this? Ehh, maybe. If you don’t already have Blood & Vomit and you want some primitive as fuck recent Black Metal with a sense of humor, then get that. If you enjoy that a lot and want to hear more, then you can get Terrorist, as long as you don’t expect it to surpass Blood & Vomit in any real way. It kind of sucks, because this album could have been so much more… just like most albums that were released in 2005 (Exodus, Nile, Kreator, etc.). What a disappointing year (aside from a couple releases).

Some highlights: Black Metal Suicide (Claws Of Perdition), Terrorist, Goat Worship

There are certain people in the black metal scene that make little to no sense. One of them is Nattefrost. With his band Carpathian Forest he proclaims often “black metal is about Satan”. Then his lyrics contain blatant heathenistic content. This is a contradiction because most heathens don’t believe in Jesus or the Christian god therefore they don’t believe in Satan. My point being is that Nattefrost has no idea what he is doing in black metal, he is simply in it for the music, which is fine. He has no claim to any black metal movements what so-ever, which is also fine. This is further demonstrated on this last than tasteful and none to decent follow up to Blood and Vomit. The album (like the first) is mindless, stupid, and pointless. It takes everything Carpathian Forest as a band does well and trashes it.
For all purposes this album is a repeat of Blood and Vomit, just much worse. Every song, obviously, sounds like a Carpathian Forest song. Yet where the Carpathian Forest songs sound good, these songs on Terrorist sound awful. Right from the first song Nekronaut this album lays the foundation for every horrible song on this album. A cheap and dirty black metal riff that has a horrible rhythm. This is exacerbated by the fact that the song is based on its main riff, so the whole song ends up being horrible. The vocals on this track and the rest of the album are much more bland that Nattefrost’s vocals on anything CF. They sound machined or screamed through a megaphone rather than how they normally sound on CF albums, gurgling, high pitched, and well screeched. Here they are just washed out and incoherent. On Satan Is Endless the whole song just sound like incoherent noise aside from a few low sounding boring riffs. At times this album even has a punk feel to it. Incoherent riffs, relentless and directionless pounding drums, and an overall tone of just screaming for screaming sake. To make this worse this album has no taste at all. Not that black metal is known for being crowd friendly, in fact I like it when Black metal bands do play music that offends peoples religions and nationality. But on Terrorist the pointless and tasteless songs are just to much. Its gets downright ugly and pointless with song like Preteen Deathfuck featuring what sounds like a five year old girl getting fucked to death. Its just plain pointless if nothing else. I am not sure what sick fucks want to hear that sort of thing.
Terrorist is nonstop incoherent black metal. Vocally its garbage, Nattefrost sounds like he is dunking his head in water and screaming through a microphone. The riffs are just cheap imitations of CF style black thrash riffs. The lack of structured and interesting drumming destroys the pace and coherence of the album musically. Anyone with any sort of taste at all will find this album totally worthless for its constant “gross for gross sake” themed songs. This is quite a shitty album with not much to redeem it other than a few interesting noises and a unique clean sung rock/metal song at the end, which is totally out of place on an album like this anyway. It gets a few point for being music, and not total noise.

Nattefrost, along with Carpathian Forest, are well known figures in the black metal scene. Along with them both is the odd humor they like to present...

Nattefrost really outdid himself on this one with the humor.

Now I never really heard much stuff from his main band Carpathian Forest, but most of what I heard was typical Norwegian black metal. Nattefrost, on the other hand, produced something here that's very "kvlt." Now this is how black metal should be done... this is some old school style black metal that's very punky and has a huge "fuck you" attitude to it. If I can recall, Euronymous (Mayhem fame) once said that black metal should be about rebellion and not giving a fuck. Nattefrost indeed lives these very words Euronymous once said. I must add that it's quite impressive, as with any one man band, that Nattefrost handles all duties on the album.

All in all, this is quite the enjoyable listen... if the damn vocals weren't so damn dominant in the end mix that is! Everything in the production defines the old school black metal ethic with buzzy guitars, muffled drums and a very down-tuned bass (think Mayhem's "Deathcrush" and Celtic Frost "Morbid Tales.") The vocals, on the other hand, overpower everything on this CD. Sometimes, it scares when a song is playing and I hear a screech come out of no where... if only the vocals were lower, this wouldn't be happening!!!! In short, the vocals really fucking suck because they're too loud and his screeches are annoying sometimes.

You want old school? Take a listen to the first track "Nekronaut (Cunt Cunt Gimme More)" and feel that huge Celtic Frost influence in the music. This is a very punky anthem and it's definitely one catchy track. Other tracks, like "Hellcommander" show a more modern blast beat approach on the music. "Black Metal Suicide" is one hell of a catchy and fun track to listen (hence the silly song name.) On the other hand, there are some "eh" songs on the album like "Satan Is Endless, Satan Is Timeless" and "Primitive Death" which either lack good song-writing skills (whether it be trying to be funny or not) and/or there's too much sample use on the album and it kind of gets annoying after a while when you want to actually hear the music, not samples!

Overall, this is a fun album to listen to and just get drunk to. Buy it? I don’t suggest that you buy this, but if you somehow get the chance, go get this burned or download it onto your computer. I don't feel it's worth the money to waste for this, but it's definitely worthy of a few spins. The humor does somewhat kill the album but then again, this album isn't meant to be taken seriously. It's either this, or just download "Nekronaut (Cunt Cunt Gimme More)" and blast that track over and over... hands down, that song owns and practically makes this album! None the less, this is not a great album so it may be funny, but it's not music you'll wanna hear over and over again.

Good stuff none the less in a humorous sense; it's worthy of the kvlt az fvck label in a very perverse sense. It's all fun and games, c'mon and join in the anti-Christian madness!!!!

Ear Candy: Nekronaut (Cunt Cunt Gimme More), Black Metal Suicide, Hellcommander...

Should stick with Carpathian Forest - 40%

mz_412, September 19th, 2005

After 2004's successful 'Blood And Vomit' album, Carpathian Forest's frontman is back with another solo Nattefrost recording titled 'Terrorist - Nekronaut Pt I'. After much anticipation and wondering whether Nattefrost lives up to expectations for that ever so important second album the answer sadly is no. After listening to this album and flicking through the booklet it seems that Nattefrost is no more than a joke, a sad pisstake of black metal's tradition of elitism. Featuring more guest musicians than a standard Roadrunner album, grindcore style tailored-to-be-offensive-so-my-mum-gets-pissed-off lyrics (eg. 'cunt cunt gimme more what the hell are you crying for?!? my grim necropenis wants more so bend over you little sadowhore'), perverted photos of 'bandmembers' naked sporting bondage garb and masturbating, recordings of Nattefrost pissing, vomiting and masturbating (yet again!), guest appearances on vocals by the 'Transexual Uberdwarves' (I kid you not!). This album is labelled in the typically Darkthrone way as being 'True Primitive Norwegian Narrow-Minded Elite Black Metal!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!' and the linernotes claim 'Recorded under grim influence of Hell, Satan, drugs, disease and fanatical precision masturbation'. Ahhh the list goes on and on, but what of the music?

Opening with the very thrashy 'Nekronaut (Cunt Cunt Gimme More)' featuring a repetitive riff that becomes boring rather quickly, screams of 'cunt' and vox that are incredibly enhanced by technology this song's only saving is the solo halfway through. You are hoping this album improves from here, and it does but only slightly. The lyrics are very juvenile and bedroom black metal-esque. Every riff is bland, simple and repetitive. Gone is the groove of 'Blood And Vomit' with the exception of 'Black Metal Suicide'. This album is much more experimental than his debut but not in a good way. The discordant, directionless guitarwork halfway through 'Hellcommander' is an example of Nattefrost experimenting and the end end result sounds horribly out of place. Another example of this is with the awfully absurd self-indulgent shit that is 'Dinsadansdjeveldyrkaar!!!!' sung by the Transexual Uberdwarves in Norwegian, with Dirge Rep (Gehenna) on backup vocals and Nattefrost whistling (or 'nocturnal whistling' as stated in the sleeve). 'Eine Kleine Arschmuzick' is a follow on from 'Nattefrost Takes A Piss' off 'Blood And Vomit' except with the addition of elevator jazz, the sounds of the toilet flushing and him washing his hands and closing the door behind him. 'Catapvltam Vrinam Philosophiam' is a recording of Nattefrost vomiting which has also been done on his first album. This may have been funny (in a really juvenile way) the first time round but the second time seems overdone, even more juvenile, predictable and does nothing but makes you laugh at Nattefrost's stupidity. Quite a lot of this album is bland, uninspiring filler.

There are a few decent moments on 'Terrorist' like the very Carpathian Forest-esque 'Goatworship' which should have been included on Carpathian Forest's 'Defending The Throne Of Evil' album. In particular reference is the eerie synths aiding the strong chorus. The verses are more frantic and are quite decent, not only in comparison to this album but to other bands as well. There is a much more thrashy feel to this album than his first album 'Blood And Vomit' bringing names like Venom to mind. The production on this album is much more rawer in sound than 'Blood And Vomit' which I am guessing is intentionally done to make it more cliche black metal. After reading some reviews of 'Terrorist' it is obvious that this is one of those albums which you either love or you hate. Solo albums tend to be quite self-centered and egotistical yet also interesting as it gives the artist enough freeroom to do whatever they wish to without the confines of being in a band. Nattefrost's eccentric nature may have been somewhat restricted in his work with Carpathian Forest, which is one of the things which makes 'Terrorist' a somewhat intriguing album based around his bizarre fetishes and sick mind. I was quite disappointed with this album, maybe it is Nattefrost's juvenile sense of humor or because it is musically bland and lacks the necro aggression of 'Blood And Vomit'. Hopefully with 'Nekronaut Pt II' Nattefrost returns to form with another brilliant album like 'Blood And Vomit'. We can only wait and see what happens. 'Terrorist' is worth picking up and at least checking out but beware anyone with weak stomachs or who lives a sheltered life. This album has potential, and some great moments but in general it is lacking.

Back and more brutal than ever!! - 100%

mereimage99, July 31st, 2005

Well, Nattefrost has returned with his sophomore release, Terrorist. With a couple of more body fluids (taking a shit and puking again) this time around and even a song called the Death of Nattefrost, this album already looks good. But that doesn't even attempt to illustrate the brutality and down-right aggression of this album. I loved the first one (Blood & Vomit), but I think that the second one is even better.
This time around, the music is much more "rock and roll." Similar to Carpathian Forest, but more old school, like Celtic Frost and Venom. With a sort of old punk-black metal feel to it. Don't get me wrong, it is totally Nattefrost all the way, just a little more kick ass and really heavy and loud. The bass is so fucking wicked that my head was shuttering for hours after listening to this album.
All and all, this album is full of nonstop, adrenaline bursting, fucking brutal music. The Death to Nattefrost song is perhaps the weakest of the album, but works well for being an outro to the album.
So, if you like puking, fucking, blood spweing, shitting, pissing fun...then you definitely need to get this album. And if you like headbanging yourself to death, I suggest you get this album.
