Funny Brutal Death? - 86%

CHRISTI_NS_ANITY8, September 10th, 2008

The second album by the Italian masters of brutal technical death metal doesn’t differ from the first full-length in terms of music quality and burden of humour that you can notice from the lyrics. These guys are, first of all, amazing in their way of playing and secondly, reading at the lyrics, you cannot resist them. The sonic violence is perfectly opposed to their will of making fun of other bands through funny titles by famous bands, here re-written and re-interpreted. They took everything to make fun of the more famous bands; they took influences from films, cartoons and other things to add humour to these violent compositions.

The music here played is the classic brutal death metal with high impact and high level of technique. The band is truly compact and heavy and the tempo changes, the stop and go, the furious restarts acquire a tremendous power with that hyper blasting guitars tune and the dry out, essential drums. Anyway, as I said, the guitars are the heaviest component here and they have that gore/brutal death metal distortion that comes from early Suffocation and that, more or less, every band in this genre has nowadays. The tempo in these compositions is generally fast but the sudden down tempo parts are full of groove and they stench of decomposition.

Anyway, this groove is not annoying at all and sometimes, during these slow parts, they remind Avulsed too. The fast parts are the classic under the name of tremolo picking while the vocals are the perfect example of guttural, infernal growl. They are truly powerful and they are completely relentless in every single song. Titles like “Scooby Doom”, “The Shower Must Go On” and most of all, “Once Upon The Motocross” are the real manifests of the unmatched brutality that goes hand in hand with funny lyrics and themes. The atmosphere of morbidity and the darkness on this CD are perfectly balanced with the lyrics and the music that, despite being truly gore and heavy, it’s never chaotic.

There are various intros and outros the songs but the ones for “Seis Seis Seis” are incredibly funny and unexpected. The umpteenth surprise of this album. Check also the one at the beginning of “Stop The Pigeon”; it’s total madness! Overall, I must admit that this album is truly funny and it’s not so easy for a band that plays so extreme. The music itself is good and the musicians are well prepared, you can hear it. The only thing I can complain about is that sometimes the songs tend to be quite similar the ones to the others. Anyway, when we have this quality and something to laugh about, who cares?

If you want a band that could make you laugh and make you enjoy the brutal death metal at the same time, check them out. They are one of the most original acts that came out of the mud of the Italian scene and surely they can teach something also the other bands outside my country.

Corpsefucking Art are truly a tremendous brutal death metal band from Italy. They are definitely the best Italian brutal death metal band that I have listened to so far. They’re an extremely creative and humorous band. This band’s imagination is quite messed up! Read the lyrics, that will tell you. War of the Toilet Gear is one of the heaviest death metal albums you will ever listen to and I promise you that. It’s packed with humor, read the song titles and lyrics. You’ll have to read the lyrics, because you won’t understand what the vocalist says most of the time. It’s apparent English is not his first language and he doesn’t enunciate the English words he sings perfectly (I know, because I read the lyrics as I listened to the songs). There’s an array of samples on many of the songs. Many of them are hilarious. They sample Star Trek, Spaceballs, The Simpsons, and that cartoon with that dog Mutley and that evil dude with the moustache and wears purple (I can look it up on Google, but I can’t be arsed to do that). They had samples on the previous album, but they are not as hilarious as the ones here. There are some cultural references on here that I think a lot of people will know. Plus there’s a couple song titles many death metal lovers will recognize as parodies.

I really like the drums on this album. Stuart Franzoni has the meanest sounding piccolo snare drum ever. Much meaner than Dying Fetus, I should add! Yes folks, it’s that brutal! It’s cool how he does piccolo snare drum blast beats on all of the songs. It sounds really excellent and it’s something I never heard before in any death metal song. It is the best piccolo snare drum sound I’ve ever heard on any album. Better than Dying Fetus’, that’s for sure. I’m not saying Dying Fetus has a terrible piccolo snare drum sound, CFA’s is much more superior.

Mr. Daisy is the man on this album. Now who is Mr. Daisy? He’s just a sick random character from the imagination of the band. Go ask the dudes of CFA and they will tell you who he is. Mr. Daisy is referred to in many songs; he’s a central character in the songs. I think the vocalist acts as him, because on many of the songs he’s singing in the first person. No he’s not singing about himself, he’s acting out the role of Mr. Daisy. When he mentions Mr. Daisy, the vocalist (I’ll get to his name later) is singing about him in the third person (such as the song Scooby Doom, Mr. Daisy has to be the man sitting on the toilet reading that newspaper on the album cover artwork. He is one gruesome looking man!

Scooby Doom starts off with piccolo snare drum blast beats and then the guitars come in. The vocals kick in and they sound brutal low and harsh. Jack “Sasa” Limone is a good vocalist. The riffs on Scooby Doom are great. Cipolla and Riccardi are great guitarists. I can only decipher what the vocalist is saying during the chorus in this song. He says “Scooby Dooby Dooby Doom, that’s the chorus! Scooby Dooby Dooby Doom, sing a long with us!” Of course, this song is some kind of weird homage to the cartoon Scooby Doo. Scooby Doom is Mr. Daisy’s dog.

The title track is quite awesome. The lyrics are extremely random. This is about bar of soap and the truth brush fighting in Mr. Daisy’s bathroom. It starts off with a sample from the movie Spaceballs. It’s got some good excellent blast beating and good guitar riffs. This is very fast song and it is not boring at all. The next song, Sachertorture begins with a sample from some movie I don’t know and the music sounds just as good as the title track. It’s fast and features great low vocals. The sample is too long though and I fast-forward it sometimes to get to the music. The song with the best sample is The Shower Must Go On. It has Homer Simpson singing a parody of the Village People song Macho Man. Instead of singing the normal lyrics he sings “Nacho nacho, nacho man!” After that the guitar sounds crazy and random notes from the high pitch strings are played. Then it goes right into the song with blast beats and Sasa growling in a sick way. Corpsesex III (The Secret Ingredient) is the shortest song and I can only understand the vocalist when he shouts “corpsesex”. That’s the chorus, “corpsesex!” This is the last Corpsesex song and there will not be a Corpsex IV!

They Won’t Stay Dead is a re-recording of the song that appears on A Puzzle of Flesh, some EP they put out in 1999. It sounds much better than the original one and they added the Spock lazer ray sound effect in the middle of the song. The two obvious songs that are parodies of songs by Deicide and Cannibal Corpse are I Cum Glue and Once Upon the Motocross. They sound nothing like I Cum Blood and Once Upon The Cross. They do sound pretty brutal though.

The most interesting song is Seis Seis Seis. It begins with a guy speaking Spanish. It’s a death metal instrumental and it ends up sounding Latin and there’s guest musicians who plays Latin instruments. It sounds funny at the end. I also find Stop the Pigeon hilarious; this is a homage to that cartoon with the evil guy and his dog Mutley. It begins with a sample from that cartoon with the evil guy (voiced by Paul Winchell, R.I.P.) singing Stop the Pigeon. It sounds pretty funny and I love blasting it out of my car. This is song has really random lyrics. A song about stopping a pigeon, I love it. It’s something you wouldn’t expect from a death metal band at all. Another song like that is Winnie the Poo. Too bad there’s no sample from Winnie the Pooh, I would die laughing if they did add it. This is obviously a parody of the beloved children’s cartoon character Winnie the Pooh.

Gorissimo is pretty cool, the final track. It’s a pretty lengthy song. It starts off sounding really brutal with the drums and guitar going extremely fast. It’s quite short and ends off with a sample from Spaceballs with Rick Moranis as Dark Helmet. It is pretty long and they loop the orchestral part of the movie many times and then finally by the 7:30 mark, it has Dark Helmet yelling, “stop this thing.” What a perfect way to end an amazing album.

This album will not disappoint any fans of brutal death metal. The only disappointing aspect of this album is that the bass was not mixed well. Notice I didn’t mention anything about the bass? They might as well used no bass at all! It’s pretty much a standard death metal record with the blast beats and fast guitar playing. There is not one slow off this album and it’s catchy. Crotchduster fans might (keyword is might, Crotchdusters may find CFA too weird) like this album for the offbeat and nonsensical lyrics. I suggest you get this album as soon as possible! Just read the last couple lines contained in Once Upon the Motocross and you’ll know what the album is all about!
