Bekhira - L'élu du mal

If only all BM bands kicked this much ass - 97%

mehoff_of_jackness, September 26th, 2007

I'll start off by saying that although black metal is my favorite genre, I find very few bands that impress me, especially when it comes to newer bands and releases. Bekhira however have shown me that there are still good black metal bands out there. Bands who are still writing the kind of stuff what made black metal great in the first place.

The melodies on this album are both melodic and sinister. The guitar work isn't in any way technical but it's very well written and catchy. The riffs are definitely the highlight of this release, as well as the excellent song writing structures. To my surprise the bass is actually audible, something which is kind of rare in black metal bands, especially ones of this nature. The drums are very typical on this album and not in a bad way. They're run of the mill black metal drums consisting of mid tempo blasting for the most part.

Every song on this album is great, there is not one song on here that stands out as filler or poorly written, though there are a few songs which stand out more than others. The Devil and the Sorcerer is probably one of the greatest black metal songs I've ever heard. This is truly an awesome album that I encourage any black metal fan to get.

FUCKING GOOD - 88%

I couldn't wait for this album. Several years after their great demo tape and a year after split EP with Desolation Triumphalis I finally got their debut album. The first thing that grab my attention was the drums sound which I didn't like so much in the beginning, but got used to it after a few listenings. The vocals are good but rather typical and I must say I prefer those on the demo '96 (more sick). The compositions are based on middle tempos, cold and dark melodies packaged in very raw sound. This is nothing new, but one can hear that this album has the spirit of the French BM of the middle nineties, which I personally like a lot. I know there are hundreds of bands that play BM in the same way that Bekhira does, but believe me or not - very fucking few of them does it well.... I really enjoyed this album and even if I still prefer their demo, this album is definitely worth buying! One of the best black metal releases from France is the last years.
