I Was Glorified... - 95%

Cyconik, March 22nd, 2007

Blastcorps, a Rotterdam-based death metal group, has released their debut album, 'Glorified'. Listening to this LP, I was surprised by the quality of everything on it: rock solid riffs which are quick and powerful, heavy drumming, excellent songwriting, and I definitely could not have asked for better production. Forever Underground have locked onto a band who have a very bright future in the underground death metal scene, and I will surely be waiting for their next releases.

This album starts out with what sounds like sirens, quickly turning into a basic, but fast, drum beat with an extremely creative riff over top of that. This album is golden-- from beginning to end, from start to finish. "One guarantee... none of us will see heaven" are the words that are muttered before the first real, full length track comes out of the shadows at you. These words seem to be carefully chosen, as they represent exactly how this album makes you feel. The brutality, aggression, mercilessness and, simply, raw emotion that these 3 guys and their session bassist have is incredible.

The instrumentals on this album are paramount. Notably clever riffs, combined with speed over a heavy drum and bass line, with the exceedingly sepulchral vocals of Aad Kloosterwaard. There is the odd acoustic section in this album, which is a nice break from the constant surging of brutality shown in the rest of Glorified. One element that increases the overall outcome of this album is the eccentric guitar work, done by Peter Paul. Riff after riff, and solo after solo come out of his hands and his guitar, enhancing the sound of this album by a shitload. Reminiscent of the exceptional drumming of Bane Of Existence or Suffocation (US), Toep Duin does a great job at holding down the beat in all of their songs, and also chips in his own two cents wherever is needed.

This release spans about 35 minutes, a little disappointing for a full-length. It feels like it is as if no time had gone by at all by the time you reach the end of the album. A very powerful album, and one that I surely was not expecting. Every note is hit right on, and as my bass teacher would say 'they're in the pocket' on everything, never missing a beat.

I hope that Glorified is a sign of good things to come from Blastcorps, as I would be more than happy to buy another death metal album of this magnitude, or even one that surpasses it! It will receive close to full marks from me, only 5 less than perfect due to the unsatisfying length. It doesn't really matter to me if you buy this album or not, but I will highly recommend it, seeing as it can only benefit you.
