Without Grief - Absorbing the Ashes

Completely different but still good - 86%

Znarglaxe, November 16th, 2003

While in no way better than the previous album, this album, LIKE the other album, has an original quality. The band kind of branched out from their more melodic sense to add a bit more brutality and fire to this one. This is evident on songs such as "Ungodly" and "Heaven Torn Apart". The guitars have taken a decidedly more incendiary appeal than on the previous album, giving the listener a much more enraged feel. The drumming has also become a bit more complex, allowing for more sounds to aid the listener in understanding the enraged atmosphere this album creates. The bass, which has become more apparent on this album than on the last album, is an immense aid in this more brutal nature the band has so graciously taken in form. All of this while still maintaining the Melodic Death sound, albeit a more traditional sense of the word, but not entirely too much more generic.

There is also on this album, a certain element that a lot of brutal songs lack, that usually only mid paced music (in my opinion) can muster. That is the type of riffing and drumming that comes in and just makes you want to kick someone's ass. It has that sound. "Ungodly" is a perfect example.

All in all, i would recommend this ot any fan of Melodic Death, as well as to people who are fans of regular mid-paced death metal.
