Wreck of the Hesperus - Eulogy for the Sewer Dwellers

Relentless Grimnity! - 90%

Excrementor, May 25th, 2006

This is one of the best demos I've heard in a long time. Irish doomsters Wreck of the Hesperus play foul sounding sludgy funeral doom, sounding like a bizzare cross between Autopsy, Bethlehem and Coffins played at half speed. The music comprises of slow, often dissonant riffs, pounding war drums and tortured screams creating a sound best described as the most fearsome Lovecraftian nightmare creatures crawling out of the foulest sewer known to man. The song structures are long, and repetitive, but never get boring. These guys know how to keep you in suspence, I found myself in parts almost holding my breath waiting for the next notes, to see what comes next. It's that good!

The production is also excellent, everything is well mixed and the instruments sound powerful. I especially liked the huge, reverb drenched guitar and bass sound, making the whole recording sound as if it had been recorded in a long metallic tunnel. The guitar tone itself isn't particularly heavy, it's only slightly distorted, almost clean, but it is still one of the most crushing sounds I've heard on cd.

Over all this is an exceptional release, especially for a demo. Well written, well performed and well recorded - this deserves a professional label re-release! WOTH are certainly a band to keep your eye out for!
