Skaur - Fullmånesang

THIS is what Black Metal is all about. - 95%

Oh yes. Skaur is what underground Black Metal is all about. In my opinion, Black Metal has mainly 2 main types of bands, production wise: The ones that are really popular and can afford perfect production and can add a million effects to their music, or the ones that have the worst production ever, where it gets to a point where you can't hear the fucking guitars anymore. But fortunately, along with Malleus Maleficarum, Skaur manages to be in that thin line right in between the 2 of them. It isn't bad or too raw exactly, nor is it "perfect" or "shiny". The clean guitar parts manage to sound great without any additional effect, and the heavier raw black metal parts still bear the exact amount of treble and gain to deliver the ultimate raw black metal experience. So far, I've only heard a few bands accomplish this (Malleus Maleficarum automatically comes to mind), and that's something that makes the listening experience the most enjoyable black metal experience i've heard in a while.

Now let's talk about the riffs. Skaur uses both distortioned and clean guitar to his own will without ever exaggerating the use of both. The clean parts are full of melancholy and sadness, and the distortioned parts are purely hateful. About the actual riffs, those have to be some of the most varied black metal riffs that can be heard in a black metal demo, if not album. The riffs range from brutal up-tempo speedy riffs, to threatening slow riffs, to some mid-tempo riffage. All that while being totally unique in his own way and not trying to rip off anyone at all.

At first listen, one may find Skaur's "Fullmånesang" quite average and so, but after a while its originality and uniqueness grows on you. This demo proves Skaur's full potential and is surely worthy of a record deal. I'm still shocked that Skaur managed to get such perfect production on a demo. This has to be the Black metal demo of the year so far. Get it at all costs.
