Ab:Norm - Inside

Uninspired and monotonous - 50%

TheStormIRide, January 26th, 2006

Ab:norm really reminds me of by-the-numbers grinding death metal. It has more groove than most do though, which makes for an interesting listen.
The intro is very strange, and sounds almost like machines or a lot of insects swarming, a nice way start to the album, but pointless music wise. The rest of the songs have the standard fast drumming and deep vocals. The guitars seem more like a death metal band than most grindcore. These riffs would not be out of place on an impaled album or on Harmony Corruption era Napalm Death.
Something that would not hurt this album would be more originality. Most of this album sounds like I've heard it before. No, the riffs and beats aren't stolen, it just has an air of familiarity. It's all very well played, and there are only a few areas that seem to be forced where they could have been worked out better. There are a few interludes that break up the monotony though, and that's a nice touch, but I can't seem to let myself listen to the entire album. The songs begin to run together. After about the fifth song is usually when I turn this off.
If you're into grinding death metal, than this is for you, no doubt, but for those who are looking for an interesting, unique album, look elsewhere. The monotony of the album as a whole is a big detractor. Perhaps with more dynamics and a more varied writing approach this album could be better. I really can't recommend this to many aside from death metal completists and deathy grind core fanatics.
