Dungeon - Demolition

Only an Omen of What Was to Come! - 80%

MindRuler33, October 17th, 2007

For those of you that don't know, Demoliton was Dungeon's 1996 full length demo which album which in turn got them discovered in Japan and led to their first substancial record contract. Listening to this demo, even 11 years after it was released and after a handful of top notch pro Dungeon releases, it's easy to see why exactly this demo was a launch pad for their career.
The playing on this album is spectacular considering how young these guys (particularly "Lord" Tim Grose" - Vocals, Guitars) were at the time this was recorded. The musicianship, particularly guitar-playing, is absolutely spectacular. The guitars offer up a great number of tasty guitar duels and the songwriting is seriously impressive being how young these guys were. Some of these songs are extremely catchy, and you're sure to have the chorus melodies stuck in your head for hours after the CD stops. It really contains just about all the characteristics of the Dungeon that was to come, but for the most part the songs are a bit more 80s-metal in style rather than the speed/thrash hybrid they would touch on on later albums like A Rise to Power. Naturally, no demo is without flaws, mainly being that you can tell it was recorded on a smaller budget both financially and time-wise, as there are performances that could have been better with more takes, and Tim's voice still sounds somewhat rough and unsure, but if you liked it to begin with you won't have a problem listening to it.
All in all, a really rewarding listen, especially for a hardcore Dungeon fan, as it allows you to both hear some forgotten songs and also hear some old versions of would-be Dungeon classics (ie Paradise, I Am Death). However, if you're just getting into the band, it might be better to start with something else.
