Morphia - Fading Beauty

A Solid doom release, albeit considerably cheesy - 65%

The_Wolftribe, January 12th, 2006

Boy, is this album cheesy. Don't get me wrong, I love doom metal, I love sad music, but Morphia's "Fading Beauty" sometimes get almost embarrassingly cheesy.

This is most evident in the lyrics, which are quite often excessively melodramatic and cliche. In the "Meaning of Forever Part 2" ballad features some almost laughable lyrics. "I wish you would be into my life forever/That would release this pain", later replacing into with "out of". Or in "Fading Beauty": "We assumed it would never end/But time was not our friend/I cry out to the blackened sky/As I watched your beauty die". Kind of makes me chuckle actually. This is a common theme throughout the album. In addition, the nasally clean vocal melodies do not help this cheesiness album. Basically the angsty melodrama in the vocal and lyrical department strikes me as quite amateurish.

Otherwise, the album is fairly solid. There are decent guitar melodies and riffs, especially in "Fading Beauty" which is actually the only song on the album I find truly decent, lyrics aside. The growls/screams are quite good actually, gutteral and low the way they should be. However they sound a little more silly next to the whiny clean vocals.

If Morphia could mature lyrically and perhaps ditch the clean vocals there would be great potential. Until then, I will however be listening to something else.
