Ashen Light - Причащение огнём

The Music of Wizardry and Hate - 85%

Velvokai, June 8th, 2005

This album is very different from earlier Ashen Light releases, it is now nearly as happy and folkish as Pesn’ Velesa, and not nearly as melodic as V Sostradanii k Otverzhennym Obrechennym – Ad!. This sounds much more like Ukranian BM, in the vein of Astrofaes and Hate Forest, but with very good and clear production. There are still some elements of folk present, mostly in outros and intros to the songs, but they are insignificant enough not to call this album folk Black Metal.
The less melodic BM sound, is somewhat unexpected from the band, but they manage to pull it off really nicely, without sounding like a bad Darkthrone rip off.
The only real flaw I can find with this album is that the keyboards are too ambient. Most of the time they just play 2 chords, and if that’s what the band wanted, then they should’ve made them quieter in the mix, like that it sounds as if they want to show how good Katerina can hold 3 keys pressed for 40 seconds.
Otrechenie ot Mira i Hrista (Abdication from World and Christ) is probably the most traditional Ashen Light song on the album, it sounds like something that could’ve been on V Sostradanii k Otverzhennym, Obrechennym – Ad!, but for some reason was omitted.
Les Koldovstva i Nenavisti (Forest of Wizardry and Hate) is another stand out, as it starts off as a depressing mid-paced BM song, before progressing into an angry and hate filled masterpiece.
The bass riff in the beginning of Dyavolitsa (Satanwoman) reminds me of the riff in Opeth’s Advent for some weird reason, though the song itself sounds nothing like it.
The first, and last tracks are matching (more or less), seeing how they are by far the two rawest songs on the album.
Even if you didn’t like early Ashen Light stuff, you should check this out, and if you liked their early stuff, then the more reasons to pick up this album.
So, to quickly recap this release: much less melodic, much less folk, and much angrier then everything A.L. has done before.
