Dimensional Psychosis - Magical Matrix of Dimensional Continuum

Magical journey through realms of chaos! - 97%

controlled_bleeding, November 19th, 2005

Dimensional Psychosis is a continuation of the band Goatlord, which was formed in 1997 with the goal to create utter musical chaos. Rarely have I heard a band with a more fitting name than Dimensional Psychosis (well, maybe Death had an even more fitting name), because this is chaos put to music. On the inlay they describe their music as “indefinable psychedelic chaos metal” but in a futile attempt to define it, I would call it schizophrenic industrial black metal. It’s hard to believe this is their first album because this is rapidly becoming my favourite black metal album of 2005.

The mix of extreme black metal with industrial rhythms, house beats and samples, sounds amazing and makes me wonder what this band is capable of in the future. They remind me of Liar Of Golgotha on LSD a bit, and to a certain extent to that fabulous project of Anorexia Nervosa front man Rheidmarr, Count Nosferatu Kommando, But Dimensional Psychosis are way more extreme and create an eerie Armageddon-like atmosphere.

Although the album was released only recently the recordings were done already in summer 2002. I don’t know the reason for this delay but maybe we’re lucky because by now they should have had plenty of time to write tracks for the next full length, which will be released by that label in Australia, Asphyxiate Recordings. How smart they were to sign them.

Although I really like this album very fucking much, there are also a few very minor points of criticism. The production is excellent as it has been through a recent remastering process prior to the official release. Furthermore, the song structures could be a tiny bit better in my opinion. The so-called ‘gabber-beat’ could be used more often, as it gives the music even more aggression and chaos.(just listen to The Berzerker and you know what I mean). The last two tracks are sort of outsiders because one of them is a Merzbow type noisesoundscape and the other one just keeps lingering on.

So, in the end I must conclude that, Dimensional Psychosis leave no doubt in my mind that we will see a fantastic follow up cd in the near future. Chaos in Extremis!

Dutchaos Metal - 85%

The music of Dimensional Psychosis (DP) is Black Metal divided in 3 styles: modern Norwegian, modern/raw North-American and DP's own chaotic style. The self-produced CD of the Dutch metallers tends more to this last style, and has an equal share of the other two elements, plus some additional moments that give the music a touch of futuristic or science fiction atmospheres, which the drummer ááGrimlord Mysteriis took care of sampling. These don't make the music lighter, they just introduce you to the real chaos, or give you some rest after it.

Most songs start with sections of complete Black/Death Metal confusion, converging into well done melodic and aggressive sections, which will eventually become chaotic again, and so on. I think all riffing styles used in this album are well accomplished.

The two guitars often play with each other, along with the keyboards. A game of well directed (into your skull, most of the times) confusion and violence. It's important to say that DP's music is more technical than the average Black Metal band, and that is a positive thing since the music flows and doesn't get boring. You will have plenty of bizarre tempo changes, twisted riffing and intrincate songwriting. The drum work is complex, although sometimes a bit hard to follow. The bass shows its grace from time to time, but it isn't a very relevant element as regards composition. The vocal work is divided between growls and screams, often simultaneously. They are well placed and have the needed fury.

The production came out good, pretty good, considering it's a self-financed CD. All instruments are audible. The CD has about 40 minutes of Black Metal, ending with about 13 minutes of sample effects, followed by 4 minutes of silence. The mentioned 13 minutes of effects go from spatial atmospheres to techno/trance craziness. I would prefer to have 50 minutes of Black Metal and 7 of effects, but that's me.

The lyrics are about the exploration of cosmos, psychology, music and magick (which seems to fit the sound of DP), although you can't understand that just by listening to the singing. The artwork is of high quality print, and that's another thing the band should be proud of.

With this CD, DIMENSIONAL PSYCHOSIS has won its place among the leaders of chaotic Black Metal, and I'm looking forward to listen to their next album, Architecture Of Realities.

Thumbs up!
