Machetazo - Sinfonías del terror ciego

Cuentos Del Muñón Gangrenoso IV - 80%

Cochino, September 2nd, 2006

The first thing I've heard of Machetazo was their song on the Carcass tribute "Requiems of Revulsion", and they and General Surgery were the only bans that really caught my attention.
A couple of years later, I read about Machetazo somewhere and I decided to get some of their stuff. So I got their demo "Realmente Disfruto Comiendo Cadáveres", and it stunk. It was just noise and maybe a decent riff or two.
But luckily I decided to give them a second chance, and I didn't regret it.
Except for the first (a song out of the "Genital Grinder" syndrome that hundreds of grindcore bands seems to suffer) and the last track (which is not bad, it's just a spoken outro), the rest is 100% old school grindcore!!!
On these days of "technical exstasy" with tons of bans playing ultra-fast and ultra-technical grind with no heart, is great to find a band that plays the grindcore we all fell in love with.
Songs 100 MPH with high and low growls and screams, totally chaotic, with a lot of the Carcass of Reek of Putrefaction and Repulsion. Just classic.
But the best is when they separate a little bit from those influences to add doom parts (like in the intro of "Niebla Fúnebre", that also has a great vocal performance by the great Chris Reifert; or "La Noche De Las Gaviotas" where they sound like Saint Vitus!), or some groove (like in "Cripta").

So, grind lovers, you better get a copy of this album. I'm pretty sure you're gonna love it.
They may not be very originals or unique. But they're honest and good, and that's enough for me.

This is great - 95%

Well, this is a band that I didn't bother to check out until recently. And I regret it. This is grind at it's best: harsh growls, pretty simple and catchy guitar work, some crunchy basslines and pretty acceptable drumming. Yes, it's not like the tightest cd on the planet, but who gives a fuck? It's a straight forward grind cd with a some horrorish atmosphere hanging over it, what more could you ask for?

I don't really know what to compare Machetazo to. But picture a mix of Repulsion and something... darker. It hasn't got the typical grindcore shouting, no, more of a oldschoolish death metal growl is here to be found. I think the vocalist does a pretty good job. He is kind of monotonose, yet insane, well.

To analyse the songs, well, about half of them begin with samples from the spanish horror film called "Blind Dead" (I think). They are in spanish, so I don't understand most of them. Well, forget about the fucking samples. Most of the songs are pretty highspeed, and some of the songs have a slower pace (El Necronomicon Templario for example, really creepy riff in that one btw). The riffing is good, most of the time very memorable, a bit thrashy at times too. The cd doesn't contain any solo's, but what do you expect from a grindcore cd?

Anyway, if you like grindcore and death metal I adwise you to check this cd out. As the title tells: this is great!
