Lord Gore - Resickened

not as bad as the first but still pretty bad - 49%

Noktorn, June 17th, 2010

This doesn't suck as bad as the first Lord Gore album but it still kind of sucks. This is the unknown younger brother to 'The Autophagous Orgy' which seems to have been dismissed because it mostly sounds like death metal instead of shitty rock music that takes melodies from the Crypt Keeper soundtrack. There's a lot more blasting and overall musical intensity this time around, which is probably what turned off all their lame fans- the fact that this sounds like a metal album. It's still nothing I would listen to regularly but at least it's mediocre rather than awful.

This isn't offensive to me in the same way that 'The Autophagous Orgy' is; it's mostly just boring. There's a lot fewer attempts at Autopsy or Obituary worship with slow, crawling passages of single note melodic or doom chords, instead replaced by more uptempo passages and a generally more aggressive delivery. The riffs seem to be a little more subdued in how 'shitty horror movie' they attempt to sound, leaning more towards traditional death metal than Sci-Fi Original Picture. It's an appreciated shift for the better; there's actually some head-nodding passages on this album, and some of the blast and tremolo sections are executed surprisingly well. The vocals seem to have taken a backseat on this album, unlike the first where they were pushed far forward in the production- obnoxiously so. Hell, just about everything is improved.

The problem is that it's only an improvement by degree: the riffs are still by and large quite boring and the song structures are as rote and repetitive as ever. Little of this album is memorable; like the first, it's really just the samples that differentiate the tracks from me, and otherwise the album functions as a long, oldschool humming noise somewhere in the background. I never knew you could make death metal sound so tame and inoffensive, but Lord Gore succeeds. Granted, 'Resickened' is more like a sprightly Raffi tune than the elevator music that was 'The Autophagous Orgy', but there's still a couple thousand albums I would listen to before this one arrived on my plate.

Anyway, the band split up after this, which is mildly unfortunate, because another album continuing this one's trend and they might have arrived in pretty solid territory. As an epitaph, though, it could be worse- they could have broken up in 2003 instead.

Kickass death metal ruined by annoying samples - 88%

Lord gore is a fucking awesome band, seriously. They are a death metal band that mixes brutal death metal, goregrind, doom metal, and a bit of stoner metal. There are also some awesome shred sections in songs like "Kicked To Death" and "Brainfucker", both of which also include some of Gurge's best vocal performances.

This brings me to my next topic, Gurge. Gurge is a weird ass dude, seriously. He mixes death growls, gurgled high vocals, and some weird ass low gurgled shit. His gurgles sound like no one else, and he sounds like his throat is being ripped out half the time. He really REALLY brings alot to the table for this band (unlike other death metal bands whose vocalists don't try anything new). He's one of the few metal vocalists that, even after artists like Mike Patton, still gives a cringe to your spine, because this dude literally sounds evil.

The only problum at any point on the album is the stupid ass samples. The samples are just pointless. They don't bring down the song's quality at all ("Megacephallus", "Kicked To Death", "Trioxin", etc.) but they do definatly bring down the album's grade. Some of the samples are good, like the Total Recall sample in "Liquid Lunch" ("Hey, let me ask you a question, have you ever fucked a mutant?") But other songs like "Human Bot Fly" just get annoying because of how long the sample goes on for. The only songs without samples are "Gastric Gore-met", "Brainfucker" (although there is a short one at the beginning of the solo), "N.C.T.B.", and maybe "Son Of Forgotten Flesh", because I'm not sure about that one yet.

Overall, this cd is a great purchase, it's filled with amazingly executed death metal, grindcore, and doom metal, as well as one of metal's most talented vocalists. Just ignore the annoying samples.
