Entwine - The Treasures Within Hearts

Gothic metal done right - 98%

shagnarokvonlustmord, December 5th, 2008

From start to finish 'The Treasures Within Hearts' is a magnificent example of gothic metal done right. 'Thy Guiding Light' opens up with melodic guitars and elegant keyboards. The violin solo is a really befitting prelude to the vocals both male and female. The whole song is beautiful and is their best effort on the album. Catchy and spellbinding. The drumming at some points gets fast with hints of double bass and then slows down to an equal pace with the rest of the band.

'Deliverance is the fastest moving song on the album. The keys are over the top and guitars, while still melodic, do get heavier and more rapidly played. 'In The Frame Of Wilderness' is one of the best examples of Panu's vocals. They really open up at the chorus and the range is really good. The song is entertaining, most of the pace is slow with exception of the instrumentation 2 minutes into the song before the violins pick up, then again before the chorus repeats. The lyrics are imaginative and eloquent. 'My Mistress' opens up with what reminds me of late 80's early 90's hair metal ballad guitar. This is actually a good thing because it is a great way to start this song. Panu's vocals sound very gothic on this one. Really the whole song sounds dated to that era I was just speaking of save for the fact it is much heavier than bands that played this kind of music. The song ends with keys and guitar dueling, it reminds me of 'To/Die/For.

The next song is a cover of 'Depeche Modes' 'Enjoy The Silence'. Honestly I think 'Him' did a better job at covering this one as 'Entwine' seem to have put little effort into this one. Then again the song took little effort to make in the first place. Only the guitar's stand out on this one. 'Veiled Woman' has a similar pace to ' In The Frame Of Wilderness', especially heard in the guitars. The lyrics to this song are pretty interesting to. The chorus is what makes this such a great listen. Finally to end this spectacular album is 'Don't Let This Night Be Over'. It is not their best song and not very catchy at all but the vocals are great on this one. 'Panu' is a really talented singer.

Overall 'Entwine' are one of the best gothic metal bands out there. The whole album is pretty damn good and each song does sound different which from what I learned about listening to gothic metal for so long is sort of rare.

For fans of 'To/Die/For' and early 'Him'.
