A while back, some folks over at the good ol' Metallica BB were talking about this small Canadian band called Warmachine. At their website I discovered some MP3s of the band's songs. Of the eight I downloaded, 3 of them are featured on here. In an age where rap and "nu-metal" is dominating the airwaves and MTV is turning Ozzy Osbourne into media darling, real metal lives in the shadows. No respect is shown to the real metal of today. Stores don't carry them, online sites over-price them and MTV execs wipe their asses on the booklets. 80s thrash and heavy metal might have inspired legions of metal bands, but none actually sound like their heroes: Megadeth, Metallica, Judas Priest, etc. Enter Warmachine. These lads sound just as if they've been plucked straight from 1985. Their songs are heavy, hard and thrashy. But they also have some melody. They'll bite your head off, but they'll make sure their teeth are clean first. Here are the three tracks on their latest demo:
Beginning of the End: The band's first single. They've also sent a music video to MuchMusic (sort of a Canadian MTV, except with music) to try and get some attention from fellow Canadians (and fellow record companies). This is a biting song with wonderful riffs and a great chorus.
Forgotten Demise: Sounds like early Megadeth. Cool riffs and great bass work drive the song while the vocals complement the instruments. It has a meaner, angrier edge than the others.
Alone: Starts off slow, but then at 0:44, the first riff hits with full force. The excellent guitar work picks up and then launches you into the song. The darkest track on the demo, it features great melodies that play alongside the guitars. Great lyrics.
All in all, this is truly an excellent example of what the band can do. I can't wait for their first full-length album to be released, it's gonna kick ass!
