Asschapel - Fire and Destruction

Pretty cool Thrash. - 74%

First things first.. Asschapel?? Who the hell thinks up names like that? This album gets marked down a few points just because of that. Still, it's a bit unfair to judge an album based on a terrible band name, so I'll do my best to go past that.

Asschapel play a fairly good band of thrash, put simply. All the songs are short, sharp bursts of hate, with some high pitched screamed vocals over some fairly awesome riffing. There's some great riffs on display here. Carcass Bloody Carcass has some great hardcore riffing over some cool dual vocal action, Pray for Blood sounds like a much scarier version of KEA-era Metallica, while both The Blessed and the Wretched and Approach the Casket mix some brutal, slower riffing with the bursts of speed these guys do so well. The riffing is backed up by a solid rythym section. The rythym section isn't too techincal, and has a very hardcore sound too it. Still, they support the songs well. There's a few leads around the place too, and they're all blisteringly fast and fairly short, but they achieve what they were meant to.. that is, to make the songs even more blistering.

All in all, this is a solid, entertaining thrash album. The production is done really well too, which is always a plus. The drums are mixed maybe a little bit too low, but the guitars are super heavy, and everything is raw and clear- which is just the way a thrash album should sound. The songs do blend into one another after a while, but it's hard to make short, fast thrash songs all that different from each other. This is a pretty cool album though. Recommended!
