Freak Kitchen - Organic

I'm so alternative. - 85%

PseudoGoatKill, November 8th, 2006

I obtained this album a year ago, give or take a month or two. When I first listened to the album I became entangled in it's catchiness. Had I reviewed the album then I would have given the album a 95 or higher. I restrained from reviewing it though. I wanted to test the longevity of this album, and see if it was worthy enough. Catchiness can only last for so long before you get sick of an album.

Organic shares a similar sound with Faith No More, in that there is a rap vibe to this album. I am not saying that this album is rap. No, the album is metal and roams into the realm of experiemental metal. This music doesn't follow many of the traditional rules of metal, and yet it's not overtly bizarre. The first seven songs from "Speak When Spoken To" to "Becky" all share the similar expereimental metal plus semi-rap vibe to them. The theme and the lyrics though change from song to song. "Independent Way of Life" is a nice snarky song that pokes fun of the underground metal kids.

"Play me your favorate tune I'll convince the world it's junk
But if you listen to what I listen to, I will slip into a funk"

If that doesn't remind you of someone in the metal scene then obviously you are not a metalhead. The remaning songs are much slower, and go from snark to angst.

Music wise I enjoy this album. The guitars, bass, and drums, and vocals work together to create an unconventional form of music that is very catchy, but also has it's longevity. The best thing about this album though are the lyrics and the message behing them. If you like your snark served piping hot, and not hidden away then you might enjoy this album. Unfortunately the serious songs take away from the mood of this album, and thus lower it's score.

Recommended songs: "Chest Pain Waltz", "Mussolini Mind", "Becky", "Independent Way of Life."
