I'll Be Watching Over Joo!! - 80%

SnowVixen, May 16th, 2004

Yeah, I discovered this band through... whatever, who cares.

Overall, this band sounds like some of that bouncy less-than-metal "gothic metal" that's been coming out of Finland lately in the form of Sentenced and For My Pain, but somehow manages to not be drawn down by lameness.

Keyboards and guitars, done by Naglfar's rhythm guitarist, are used to actually further the mood and "feel" of the album (as Anathema do), as opposed to coming off laughable. Though the album is by no means technical, it has a little something over it's competition in the genre. I think it's something along the lines of "well written songs", but what do I know?

Vintersorg's vocals are truly the highlight of the album (as is usual with him), and the more somber mood definitely allows his voice to shine through. His deep-ish voice fits this genre quite well, but at no points sounds like a generic lamenting goth. Of note, his accent very rarely comes through... except on...

The third track, entitled "The Watcher", is definitely the highlight track. It has everything anyone in the mood for some guilty moroseness could ever need. From the gloomy Anathema-esque guitars at the beginning through the beautiful vocal layering to the catchy ass chorus, this song just over all kicks ass all over the place. Well... as much ass as a goth could kick... which probably isn't very much. The sole flaw in this song is Vintersorg's accent coming through during the chorus (as my review title states), but who the hell cares about crap like that?

This album is surprisingly good, despite all the things that should, by all accounts, make it not so good... and something that fans of goth metal and Vintersorg should obtain somehow. Fans of the more brutal end of the spectrum... I dunno, your girlfriend would probably like it.
