Paroxysm - Revelation Is Denied

Pretty brutal stuff... - 82%

invaded, May 29th, 2006

Some death metal from Canada's capital of metal Montreal. These guys have some pretty good potential. The vocals are awesome, this guy has a really unique voice and his double punches are pretty cool. Also if anyone has ever seen these guys live, this guy is a spectacle to behold. The riffing is pretty good, nothing overly technical but solid riffs nonetheless. The bass does not have a very overpowering presence in the sound but they do sometimes use it to pull the old death metal trick of introducing your guitar riff with the bass line. The drums are the only weakness of the record. But boy does this slow things down. You're always under the impression that the songs are awesome and very well written, but that they had to slow the tempo down so that the drummer could keep up.

The album starts with Golden Panoramas, which is nothing more than a short gloomy intro. Profound emotional Paroxysm starts of very strong and then when those vocals come on you know you're listening to something with potential.

My personal favourites are Humanimality and Paroxysmic Rage, tracks 4 and 5. These songs are heavy, well written and very tight. The starts and stops are very well executed and keep the listener interested. Another interesting tidbit about this record is that Flo Mounier of Montreal's Cryptopsy does some backing vocals on a few songs.

All in all I would say that this is a very solid record, but there needs to be more speed and maybe a bit more technical proficiency. A new drummer maybe? A very solid record altogether.
