Cirrosis - Reciclando desesperación

Competent if unspectacular Death Metal. - 60%

caspian, February 5th, 2007

Death Metal, for most bands, means playing one kind of music and one kind only. It's a shame, because while Death Metal isn't exactly an incredibly broad genre, there's still plenty of room for innovation- whether it's by adding Jazz, Industrial, or combining it with some super slow doom stuff. Cirrosis kind of belong in the middle of those two areas- this album isn't as left field as say, Cynic or Atheist's stuff, but it's still nice and unique, employing death, groove, some doom, and maybe even a bit of a Meshuggah influence here and there. Still, these guys have a long way to go before they can get anywhere close to those kind of bands.

There's some good songs here, fo' shizzle. Negando no lo negado has some great riffs, some of which are quite off-kilter, and then switching that around with some groove metal style riffing. Dame Tu Muerte is fairly slow and doom infused, with some nice subtly melodic dirgey riffs. Basically most songs here have some good riffs, and there's a fair bit of variation.

As with most newer bands though, there's a few problems. The songs really don't progress enough. There's a couple of riffs and then the songs end.. No real feeling of completion or anything like that. Also, the lead guitarist is really inconsistent- there's a few sweet shredding solos, but whenever he slows his soloing down, it's off key, not very melodic and pretty bad. (Regeneracion being the biggest example.)

Those kind of problems are typically of many a band, though, and it's hard to hate these guys too much for that kind of stuff. This isn't groundbreaking death metal, not by any stretch of the imagination, but there's plenty of decent riffs here and it's an enjoyable enough listen. Is it an essential buy? No! But it is by no means a terrible album.
