Solid Album - 80%

Gothiccc, March 14th, 2013

Certainly when I saw the album cover, the pagan spirit still lives, very much so you feel like listening to the music when you see the album cover.

Basically, this demo album contains just two tracks, but of long length. Each track is a journey. There are a good amount of elements in the music. The typical dungeon-like synth that is present in the first demo is present here. There are also clean male vocals, keyboards, and folk elements. Some black metal vocals appear at times in the song as well. A highlight part of this album is in the first track, Jam Synem Orlim Jest na Wieki! Pt1, at the 16-minute mark when the song gets quicker and more action-packed in its resemblance of a battle or war.

The second track, Jam Synem Orlim Jest na Wieki! Pt2, starts off awesomely with beautiful keyboards, tribal drums, and synthesizer in the background followed by black metal vocals. As the track goes on, the keyboards continue in the sound of an organ this time. More synthesizer, keyboard, and male vocals will continue, eventually getting the listener stuck in the beautiful music.

Overall, this album deserves about an 80% from me. One could say the music is boring at times, but I would disagree. It's all action-packed. I'm not sure what would make this album a masterpiece. Nonetheless, it proves to be enjoyable. I recommend this album for people who like black metal, folk, ambient, pagan, and classical music.

The Slavonic Mortiis? - 75%

Pestbesmittad, October 6th, 2007

This demo contains two long songs of pagan ambient music. With a format like this I immediately thought of Mortiis, who used the “two very long songs” formula on his three first albums. With the songs being as long as they are, the challenge of keeping the listener interested is of course considerable yet not impossible. So, how does Mr Wojnar fare? Not too bad but I can’t say that this is a total masterpiece either.

The music consists of keyboard melodies and chords which every now and then make me think of old Mortiis stuff but there’s also a Slavonic touch to the music, which cannot be found if Mortiis’ early works. Wojnar also uses vocals more often than Mortiis did on e.g. his second and third albums. This is something I like. Since both tracks are as long as they are, they can be seen more like journeys than as simply “songs”. Both tracks contain many changes of mood. Sometimes the music is heroic and proud, at other times it’s sombre and subdued. The music never gets really dull but I also feel that more keyboard layers could have made these songs more majestic and varied. There are times when I’m thinking “he could have made more out of this part by adding more melodies or chords to it”. This release lacks somewhat in the majesty department and doesn’t manage to create quite as epic a feel as the old Mortiis albums. On a positive note, the keyboard sound here is better than on his next demo where I felt it was too feeble.

Out of the two tracks “Pt 1” consists of a lot of different parts, which is good. This way no part gets repeated too much. In the end it might be a little too long a track but I don’t think it’s boring even if all the different parts are quite simple. The keyboard parts are more layered on “Pt 2” and this part is also more majestic, coherent and “easier” to listen to (if such a word can be used). I like the use of Polish language, as it sounds really good when Wojnar e.g. speaks in a sombre tone over the music.

Just like with “Kiedy Duch Wojny Nade Mna Powstanie”, I feel that this release is a case of not quite living up to its potential. A bit more complexity in the songs and perhaps even some additional nature samples would’ve made the music better, more cinematic. Wojnar presents a vision, yet on this demo he can’t quite reach this vision through his musical expression. Anyway, if you like early Mortiis and other ambient stuff I urge you to check this out too. There are many ambient bands in the black metal scene that are much worse than this.
