Nuclear Winter - Abomination Virginborn

promising crushing old school death metal! - 80%

Nuclear Winter it is the band of Anastasis Valtsanis, the boss of Nuclear Winter Records. Abomination Virginborn it's their third demo and knowing NW Records’ releases it wasn’t a big surprise when I discovered that they play old school death metal. The 90’s death metal scene of Florida probably had a great influence upon Anastasis, I detect especially Morbid Angel influences. Maybe it’s not nice to say this, but I think that Nuclear Winter is a kind of a primitive version of early Morbid Angel, they music has a sick and morbid atmosphere just like in the case of the above mentioned Morbid Angel. Of course they don’t play that technical like MA, plus the vocalist it is not that great as David Vincent, but that’s not a problem. The sick riffs, the anti-melodic solos, the guitarwork and the general approach of the music are very similar to Trey Azagthoth’s style, especially in the slower parts. I cannot say that Nuclear Winter is a band with an original and innovative style, but they play very well their instruments and the songs are memorable too. The only thing I don’t understand is that Anastasis why didn’t released this demo at his label, because this material is stronger then several NW Records’ releases. Those who are into Altars/Blessed/Covenant period Morbid Angel and early US death metal probably would appreciate Nuclear Winter as well. The demo came out in 500 copies on MC with a nice cover.
