Warscars - Killing Rate: Complete

The Kind of Grindcore we NEED. - 95%

Raptor45, March 16th, 2009

I'm constantly on a search for new grind talent all over the globe, and when my mouse icon landed on the band "Warscars" from France, I was instantly in love. These guys have psychotic amounts of talent to put forth into the grindcore world. With "Killing Rate : Complete", they capture a rampaging essence and blast it into the face of every listener.

Each song is packed with crunchy, distortion raped guitar riffs. Slipping all over the fret board, but hitting key notes and adding heavy as fuck elements to the 8 tracks of this glorious EP. Not sure of the guitar tuning. It's not too low, but it's just the right amount where you can hear the power chords exploding out of the amplifier. Very impressive guitar work, with a random array of pinch harmonics, and tremolos to feed the hungry grindcore fans.

The snare drum in this album has a kind of a click sound to it, which guides the songs along with eat splitting double bass strokes and fills. The drummer is better than the average grindcore drummer, who would usually just do blast beats through the entire thing. This drummer, however, has a unique take on using his ride cymbal and takes advantages of his toms in some of the dozens of drum fills in this album.

The only problem I had with this, was some of the vocals were a bit high pitched. Some of the screams are almost funny, as they are higher than what you'd expect from a grindcore band. It's nothing to ruin the CD, as the other vocals, the growling, on this album is filled with fury and rage.

I sense a huge influence of Nasum and Regurgitate put together on this one. So any fans of those 2 bands will find a sweet blend of gorging on a sweet blend of grinding brutality. Very impressive, and their newest release (Split with Leng T'che) carries on their growing song list, frantic and just fucking awesome.

Gronibard...? - 83%

MutatisMutandis, April 25th, 2007

Bones Brigade Records, while a competent label, is generally hit or miss for me. For example, while these guys proudly presented the bulk of the Last Days Of Humanity catalouge, they are also home to Sylvester Staline, which is simply one of the worst Powerviolence acts I've had the displeasure of hearing. In fact, the only real reason this MCD's sitting in front of me right now is because of the near-sexual allure emanating from the musicianship (and possibly the loins) of the Gronibard members founding this lesser-famed act.

The Gronigay's self-titled has rocked my eardrums to paste countless times since I picked it up three years ago, and it's silly variation, but fantastically brutal and cohesive sound never gets tired. Fortunately, this EP marks another high point for Bones Brigade, and if nothing else, sounds like a more focused and far more serious old school version of Gronibard with hints of Blockheads and Death By A Thousand Cuts-era Leng T'che's groove and tightness. The vocals really back up the allusion to a buckled-down Gronibard, as they take the frantic quality up a notch, giving them enough extra grit to sound feral as opposed to flat out ridiculous.

Other than that, there really isn't much to say about this release; after all, it is only 9 minutes long. If you're an established fan of Gronibard, or Grindcore in general, this kinda thing is more than likely will float your boat (or toss your salad if you're still fascinated by the members main group). It's a solid, entertaining listen, but definately nothing you haven't heard before.
