Assück - Anticapital / Blindspot / +3

A Landmark in Grindcore - 100%

WinterBliss, January 14th, 2008

Simply said, this is how you do grindcore. Assuck were able to form some of the best grindcore that exists today. Energtic, thought-provoking, punishing, and undeniably powerful, Anticapitcal alone is a masterpeice. With this package you're lucky enough to have some equally awesome music from various eps.

Assuck is a largely overlooked band and it's a shame. Here we have extremely heavy and thick grindcore. The album is mostly fast paced but there are plenty of breaks and build-ups so that the album is not repetitive and tedious, something that many grindcore bands tend to be. The vocals are deep death metal vocals, that can be understood at times. The album is riddled with great riffs, ones that actually stand out and don't just blur together, unlike a lot of grindcore. The drumming contains a great mixture of blast beats, mid-paced death metal beats, and some crust-like beats.

Like all good grindcore the lyrics are political (in left field of course) and well written. It's a real pleasure to actually read the lyrics and "inspiring" for lack of a better word. It just doesn't get any better than...
"Fighting to scale the class ladder
that splinters so many hands.
Uncivilized. I'd rather close my eyes."
Especially how the vocalist emphasizes the last line. This might just be the highpoint of the album. Assuck also does an impressive job of being able to be catchy at times, with songs like "State to State" and "Spiritual Manipulation", you can't help but bang your head.

Another thing that sets Assuck apart from countless other grind bands is how interesting each song is. There is enough variation and enough riffs to keep each song interesting and worth listening to. Poor songwriting is usually the pitfall of many bands, but Assuck proves to quite adept at writing neck-breaking songs that keep you asking for more. The structures of the songs and the actual components are varied enough for me to still get blown away after so many listens. The extra tracks are just as equally impressive, same type of stuff: all stellar.

I would go as far as saying this is the best grindcore album ever released, it overshadows anything Napalm Death or Carcass ever did, and laid the groundwork for bands like Phobia and Misery Index.
