Mirror of Deception - Foregone

Sublime - 90%

Warpig, March 14th, 2007

Mirror Of Deception have been touted as Germany’s leading Doom act for years now, but as you may have guessed, playing that kind of music will never make you rich or famous even if you're number one!

Although their style is often described as Melodic Doom, they basically play nothing but Epic Doom Metal. The main difference to other Epic Doom bands, however, is the fact that Mirror Of Deception have a more melodic singer, and because of that their sound differs quite distinctly from the sound of their peers.

Production-wise "Foregone" is an intermediate step between their debut "Mirrorsoil", which was plagued by a much too thin production and "Shards", which shows how Mirror Of Deception should sound like. "Foregone" possesses the power that "Mirrorsoil" was lacking, but it also lacks the clarity of "Shards", as it has a pretty muffled sound.

Although the quality of the songs, as usual, is at a constant high level (i.e. you won't find any fillers), "Foregone Way", "Inscrutable" and the wonderfully melancholy "Descended" stand out, followed by "Bleak", which features guest vocals by former vocalist Markus Baumhauer and "Mirthless", the most melodic song on the album.

On "Foregone" Mirror Of Deception have once again achieved what only few others seem to be able to achieve, namely creating melodic, melancholy and emotional music without sacrificing the heaviness. A truly sublime album!
