Amagortis - Abominable

Good death metal in the vein of Cannibal Corpse - 85%

Adrian_Grave, May 13th, 2008

Now this is one of the few bands that borrowed the Cannibal Corpse sound that actually sounds great!

This cd is death metal in the vein of Cannibal Corpse, Malevolent Creation, Morbid Angel, all your standard death metal bands, but I must say that this sounds more like Cannibal Corpse than anything else. While this might not be entirely original, I couldn't say I give a fuck, when I'm in a death metal mood, I'll crank this. The best way to describe this is Cannibal Corpse with more variety on vocals and music, with catchier riffing. This band is following the death metal formula that made Cannibal Corpse famous, but doing so adding their own touch.

The vocals are great, and offer variety, and they sound pretty harsh vary from higher pitched vocals to deep growls, as well as downtuned vocals, they sound familiar to the vocals of Cannibal Corpse. One thing that separates the vocals here from newer Cannibal Corpse is the fact that the vocalist here knows when to shut up, and doesn't just drown the whole mix by constantly rapping in a death metal deep voice.

The instruments here are what make this such a brilliant cd, the guitaring is surprisingly catchy (for a band that worships Cannibal Corpse) and has big variety, and has a and has a blend of attitude mixed with a style that reminds me of Cannibal Corpse. There are some killer guitar solos present here as well which is awesome.

The drumming is very well done, the drummer definately knows his job. The drumming compliments the music style, and the drumming never sounds crap. The drummer keeps up to the pace of the guitar and also slows down to suit the pace of the music.

The bass is actually audible throughout the whole cd which is a miracle in underground metal. Even when the instruments are going off full tilt you'll still be able to hear the bass. The bass notes are very well done, and any bass player would be able to appreciate them.

This is a solid cd, as all the tracks are good and stand out in their own way. The intro at the beginning is there to bring atmosphere to the cd, and the theme reminds me of those native Americans that used to eat each other and shrink each other's heads, the intro leads into a track called "Cannibal Obsession" which is a catchy as fuck mid paced song with killer Cannibal Corpse styled riffing, the third song is more straight forward and aggressive with a little less catchiness, but still awesome, and the next track is the title track, which is one of my favourate tracks on the cd, it has catchiness, aggression, speed all in one, and I love the bass notes in this song! The cd carries on with awesome songs, and another stand out track is "Evil Shit" which starts with some catchy and evil midpaced riffing which sets a high standard for the rest of the song and it fails to disappoint! All the songs here are awesome and there are no "wtf" moments.

One more thing worth mentioning is the production, it reminds me of the production of newer Cannibal Corpse.

Imagine Barnes era Cannibal Corpse songwriting mixed with a newer Cannibal Corpse production, and you get Amagortis's "Abominable"! I reccomend this to all CC fans and to fans of death metal, even if your anti-CC then still give them a try, enough said.

One problem is that their newer album is very average, instead of death growls you get "breeeee" haha so I wouldn't rush out to go grab it. I do hope this band reads this review and changes back to their old sound.
