Edge of Sanity - Until Eternity Ends

Eternity is not over - 75%

Taking the band's word for it, "Until Eternity Ends" is a four-track ep featuring music that was rapidly made a "separate story" during the recording of "Purgatory Afterglow" and something that might be as interesting as their "proper" albums. No wonder, the guys from Edge Of Sanity became more and more interesting from material to material. This is how they managed to create an album that seemed to be a bit more risky compared to "Unorthodox" and "The Spectral Sorrows", and despite numerous "novelties" it managed to continue the characteristic EoS style. And all this regardless of the band's declaration (on the back of the disc), which was clearly different and could raise concerns about lower level of whole music.

Today it would be said that this is a typical marketing trick and a campaign to artificially extend the discography with new discs created in haste. Well, but not in the case of the Swanö band! This ep perfectly shows that even on their smaller releases, the group was still able to surprise, create very good songs and that it was worthwhile to spend money on such curiosities at all. On "Until Eternity Ends" there was a performance that could hit both "The Spectral..." or "Purgatory...", but in the context of...experiments. So here there are solutions that somehow started earlier or developed later, but with such differences as a much reduced amount of brutality, faster tempos and no "sand" in the guitars.

It turned out quite nice, because such a title track contains a lot of decent melodies, is quite dynamic and hitty and it sung interestingly (maybe in gothic style, but still different than in "Sacrificed"), and at the same time it still maintains the characteristic style only for Swedes. A similar approach is presented by "Eternal Eclipse", which already clearly drifts into simpler and more rock melodies (although without this momentum), while "Bleed" (sung by guitarist Andreas Axelsson) turns quite nicely into the areas of "drunken" Entombed, and finally, returning into lighter regions, the group can interestingly transform "Invisible Sun" by The Police into a progressive-melodic track...that can be associated with the lighter ones from the next album!

I see the simple purpose of "Until Eternity Ends": it's a great addition to the discs like "The Spectral..." and "Purgatory...", and at the same time, it's quite an interesting mini-album, showing a slightly different face of the band (because it's not exactly the same sound as on discs). And the most important, this is not a release that aims to taking out the money of fans..

Impressive, but could be a little more. - 83%

A great piece of EP death metal. Melody is blatant but without making the band sound like metalcore. The first two songs really capture a spectacular atmosphere of aggression, fearful omen, power and ominous fear. The third track, "Bleed" sounds a little like "killer filler". Kind of glib and rather lame. But this is fortunately only one of the four tracks. The closing track displays Dan Swanö's excellently varied vocal range. It showcases Swanö's ability to truly sing graceful and powerful clean vocals alongside his death metal growls. The final song also highlights the whole band's ability to really do a great job at pulling off a Police cover song. Quite impressive for an ending.

All in all, a good EP. Just next time, avoid the "killer filler" track (Bleed). As for cover songs, for a death metal band to attempt pulling off a pop cover song is extremely risky in every way. Luckily, EOS pulls off a Police cover with ease. Make sure any other death metal band chooses their cover songs carefully.
