Garwall - Black Beast

Good debut - 67%

KayTeeBee, December 3rd, 2004

This is the first full-length release by the French metallers Garwall. They play Melo-Death, varying between up-beat and mid-tempo, and it doesn't contain a single acoustic interlude or anything like that. They reminded me a lot of Dissection at times, but the more I listened to this album, it eventually became really boring. The guitar sound could vary a lot more, it always keeps the same amount of distortion, which makes all the riffs sound very similiar.

This is also not unique at all, some of the songs on here sound way too much like Dissection/most Melo-Death bands. What the Melo-Death scene really needs is more fucking originality, and to stop playing the same old riffs over and over again.

If you've just gotten into Melo-Death, this album will probably impress you a lot. But if you're an avid Melo-Death listener, you'll probably think this is far too boring and generic.
