Incriminated - Hypocricide

A Step into New Direction - 80%

Paskamato, September 29th, 2007

After the ground braking long play “Miracle of Purity” and, dare I say, experimental split CD with Tuska, Incriminated takes another step. On this this four song 12” EP (with each sides having different speed – a 45rpm, b 33rpm) you hear no great bass lines, nor flirting with traditional heavy metal (as on split with Tuska).

On the first side there is two basic old-school black metal tracks. Guitar sound is thin, speed midtempo and drum beat quite simple all the way. Solid stuff, but nothing special.

Ugliness that opens side b is also quite basic track but the last track, eight minutes long Lambs of the Deceitful Shepard shows another side of Incriminated. This almost epic track begins with slow part with “clean” (rather whining) vocals. After a while, the song moves into the same tempo and beat heard in all the three other songs of the EP. Then again, opening riff comes back with some church bell echoing on background. Great song indeed.

Well, all in all this EP doesn´t quite stand in line with the previous two Incriminated released. Nevertheless, it is nice prove that some bands still can progress and not just repeat the same formula again and again. In fact, this EP is in no way bad one, actually it is well above mediocre and due it´s short length, it doesn´t get boring at any point.
