Sleazy Slovak Sickos - 60%

faecophile, August 12th, 2008

To get one thing out of the way from the get go, death metal from as relatively poor (certainly in comparisons to Western Europe or US standards) a country as Slovakia is always liable to have a production sound those of us accustomed to more 'polished' sounds would cringe at.

When put into the geo-political context and 'Open Mind' mode is engaged, to be perfectly honest, while it isn't particularly anywhere close to a 'perfect' production sound, I've actually heard worse sounding music coming from other supposedly more 'developed' countries.

The music itself is pretty average fun brutal death very much in the vein of their countrymen Sanatorium - namely gutturals, brutal bouncing grooves and the occasional sick slams.
I personally am of the disposition that for this kind of band, the negative quality of the production can sometimes actually work in the favour of the band in that it gives it a low-slung, dirty, disgusting feel.

This is something I feel Sanatorium achieve quite well - whether intentional or not would be best answered by the band. Also, as superficial a remark as it is, there is pretty much absolute base minimum effort gone into the artwork and packaging - for example a front cover consisting of nothing but block black and the band name & release title in standard Arial font - which, again when put into contrast with the likes of Sanatorium only makes the band look somewhat half-hearted.

Music-wise, to give an exact approximation of the aesthetics here would be pretty redundant as there isn't actually a great deal to explain to be perfectly honest.
Think of pretty much any modern "brutal death metal" band, ie. blasturbation-oriented drums, sewer level gutturals and grooves to jig along to and you pretty much have all the in-depth musical diagnosis of 'Co.Ed Killer' that you're likely to get.

So in all, I would say that the merit of this album would depend on the circumstances with which you obtained it.
Namely if you paid for it (and depending on how much you paid for it) you may well be a little disappointed, if you got it free or for pretty cheap then you probably won't mind it.

It's utterly far far from anything I would recommend anyone to go out and pick up/ download/ listen to, but it's also far from the most unpleasant listen I've had.

Not bad, just not particularly great either. Though their apparent relocation to the UK would bode good omens for the future, with the possibility of a far better production job & better quality studios, I would nevertheless advise anyone reading this to make one simple decision.
Before buying/getting this album, go listen to Sanatorium first.

Decent but not a winner - 50%

Goreopsy's self titled release "Co. Ed Killer" is a decent album but at the same time not very pleasing. While the guitar work is fast and brutal the overall production of the album is very poor. First of all the instruments are all thrown in the background as very lame ass growls kick in. Basically all the spotlight is focused on the vocals. In other music this may be okay, but it's a turn off in death metal.

When it comes down to it this album is a very poor start off for goreopsy. Reminds me much of Cock and Ball Torture, lame vocals over drowned out guitars and drumming. It's a pain to listen to. Much like disgorge's Cranial Impalement(or what i've heard of it), even though Disgorge was able to learn from their mistake and come back with consume the forsaken. The instruments on this album are very good but they are really hard to make out most of the time.

Though the riffs aren't extremely technical it's still good brutal death metal. I prefer it that way rather than the band wanking off with repetitve 'technical' riffs like necrophagist has done. It's just plain brutal and perfect for this band. After a while the vocals get more digestable but they are still lame compared to other death metal bands. Goreopsy is not a contender for a good debut, maybe next time. This album was poor mostly do the vocals and production. The rest is great. :)
