Death Rides At Dawn - 70%

MegaTormentor, September 28th, 2004

I don't know how Occultus was the vocalist of Mayhem after Dead suicide, His vocals sounds like a 12 years old boy trying to immitate David Vicent vocals on Altars Of Madness album, but well, his vocals are not totally bad, there is an exception on "Death Rides At Dawn" which is Occultus uses a totally un-creative kind of black metal vocals and sounds really funny, the most well vocals are in "Condemnation" Occultus sounds more raspy than the other two tracks, also some clean backing vocals in "Occultus Brujeria" (in fact the backing vocals sound like harry potter trying to make magic spells) And some low vocals as well.

The production is very raw and treble-ish (and a bit crispy) which is very aceptable in an underground band.
The Riffs and Melodies are very good, simplistic and primitive.. maybe only comparable a bit with Morbid from Sweden (Ironically, the first Dead band). there's also two good (but a bit inaudible) solos

This little EP can be labeled as Thrash with some Death Metal influences or as Melodic Death with thrashy riffs (be sure, this is not gothenburg or mallcorish melodic death a la the haunted !!) and a good cover artwork created by Knegg (the guitarist).

If you want a rare ep, or if you are a fan of Melodic Death/Thrash, maybe you will enjoy this EP.

70 points.
