In love with missanthropia review - 70%

isa, March 3rd, 2005

Ok this is my first review so please bear with me.
I’m going to review this track by track then a overall review.

Prelude to Missanthropia the intro track is a 1:32 min long keyboard intro, a fairly mild pace, nothing to special but really builds up a atmosphere to what is about to come from the EP, possibly a little long winded but none the less very effective.

Demonic Queen again starts with a keys intro shortly followed by what sounds like a punk drum beat followed by a melodic guitar riff for a few seconds, then the first glimpse of the vocals, slow dragged out screams over a melodic riff and medium paced drums. After about a minit or so the drums speed up kicking in with some mid speed double bass which only lasts for about 10 seconds or so before the whole song slows down to long held chords and held screams.
1:40 it kicks in with its full potential with a faster riff and speedier drum beat and keeps this pace up for a while befor turning melodic again with some excelent black metal vocals, this song has a habit to change pace alot in the song, especially towards the end where it slows right down and then finally picks up the pace one last time with some very atmospheric keys over the top and some brilliant vocals some more chanting groans and some more typical black metal vocals.

Your Blood My Cult again starts off with a slow keyboard intro (i think we are starting to see a pattern here). Then a drum fill kicks in the slow drums under the keys and again the misanthropic vocals kick in but no sign of a guitar yet. Eventually when they do kick in it is to a slow but powerful riff, the drums not changing pace much, and nor does the guitar for a min and a half or so, then kicking in to what seems to be a blast beat, but the kick drum tends to be a little low in the mix at this point, so all you can hear is the snare and the hihat. After slowing down again for another time it sounds as if this may be it for the song, but then one more blast of speed guitaring and drumming finishes the song

Here Lies My Bride again starts off with a keys intro with the kick drum in the back which then puts a actual beat in to the song, with again vocals over the keys and drums. Again its a slow riff and slow drums, the EP seems to be fairly slow so far with the odd blast of speed. This song was pretty much the sam all the way through untill the end where it has a standard metal riff, again going back in to a slow pace to finish it.

Dismal Sadism AGAIN starts off with a keys intro, equally as slow as the last 4 and again with the kick drum underneath it, but speeding up showing this may look promising, then a nice long scream comes in as the drums start to speed up, with a very odd guitar riff. Finally it kicks in with some tremolo picking and and some double bass, you start to think there may be a glimpse of traditional black metal coming but then it cuts out again in to a slow riff until it slows down once more pretty much until the end of the song with the odd pace change but it always reverts back to the slow riffs.

Overall a good listen for the first 2½ 3 songs untill you notice that they are starting to sound the same, and the only thing that really shows they are different songs is the keys intro they all have at the beginning, which seems to get predictable after a while, as does the structure of the songs, Excellent musicianship, and brilliant production, it is just a shame that there is such a slow pace all the way through the songs, and you can predict when it will speed up, other then that, fucking ace. Probably for fans of illnath and other such bands.
